I was talking with my director the other day about how I think the US should be implementing longer maternity leave policies and generally better parental leave policies for parents who have given birth/had a partner give birth/adopted a child, and she said it was "a crackpot idea meant to push socialist agendas." There is a business development expection to eventually convert to equity; the expectation at the start is to assist with existing work. Jumping essentially let's me short track the road to partner. Most likely getting fired, tips on how to find a job ASAP? I made a pretty big mistake that required supplemental filings with government offices to fix (missed some items when reviewing/comparing long lists of things across 20-30 years). It’s fixable and the client isn’t really getting hurt by this (worst case signing gets delayed), but my anxiety is telling me to prepare for the worst. Can I ask for extra time at the firm to find a new job (so I wasn’t “fired”)? Or should I go for severance?

When do partners decide when an associate is good enough to make partner? I’m a senior and it is extremely clear to me when an associate has it or doesn’t, and moreover it doesn’t take eight years to figure it out; it takes just one or two matters for me to know if they’re adding value or are ultimately just a commodity. It’s hard for me to avoid the conclusion that associates are largely being strung along by partners who are going to can them at some point, long after that decision is made.
