Any advice in how to find a good doctor? Mine just told me that a poptart and 6 cups of coffee doesn't constitute a meal so he's clearly a hack

I was just thinking about this today (totally understand the satire in this post). But do you think there are as many incompetent medical doctors as there are lawyers? I guess I’ve always assumed that getting through med school etc. made them competent but holy shit is that untrue in law.

The barrier to entry for law school is miles lower than med. If you have a pulse and qualify for federal loans some school will take you. Bar exam is "minimum competence" so low bar (pun sorta intended) there too.

What do you all do to make non-professional / personal connections? Particularly with the Coronavirus, and being in domestic relations, I wake up, go to work, work out, go home. So outside of law, my interactions with people are only at the gym given that my area is draining— particularly at the moment. Probably a good thing for now; but if we take coronavirus out of the equation, I’m interested what others in the community do to develop personal connections.

About 10 days ago I was exposed to someone who later tested positive for covid. I’m super careful normally. I got a rapid test 7 days after exposure and a PCR test 8 days after exposure and they both came back negative. Since about day 5 after exposure I’ve been SUPER tired though. I’ll drink a ton of coffee, way more than normal, and still feel exhausted. Then off and on I’ve been having stomach issues. Have any of you had this happen? I feel like I have to have it but the tests say no. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Additional Posts in Big Law

I feel so many of my big law co-workers purchase homes $1M+ homes as senior associates but I always struggle to believe that I will be able to do the same. I started saving aggressively this year as a midlevel but still feel so far away to be able to comfortably afford. Additionally, I always have a fear of job loss due to my own parents losing their jobs in 2008 and essentially growing up with no resources.

What are other people’s experiences?

My brother studies law at a top 10 law school and wants to work in government or for a non-profit where stresses are lower and he gets to feel more ownership to and meaning in his work, and he has heard all my complaints 😂

The pressures of his peers and biglaw are eating him up however - he’s getting good grades and feels like he is "supposed" to want to go into biglaw. I kind of feel for him, but don’t know what to tell him to cheer him up.

Anyone else "struggling" financially? I know, it sounds ridiculous. Two kids (pre-school), mortgage (10 yr I/O), loans (but not huge), full time nanny (7 to 7), and just life expenses. Wife also works full time and does decent. We both max out our 401k, but after all our expenses, at the end of each month, I'm stoked if we can save a dollar. And struggling is definitely the wrong word, but just curious if any other mid/seniors feel the same or had any tips. We live in Los Angeles.

What is it like to lateral out of big law, to a regional firm (~200 attys)? Pay is market, slightly lower billable target. I expect the work to be sophisticated but don’t know yet. WLB is supposed to be pretty good and heard that the firm doesn’t fire people. I think the partnership may be hard to make, and growth could be limited given the size of the firm/even smaller size of the practice group (5 people!). If anyone’s made a similar transition, what are some pros and cons and hindsights?

I've only been in biglaw for a year, but have been practicing for seven years so far. I used to be a state regulator for this practice area and generally enjoy working at a private firm. A partner at a boutique firm that I'm friends with has called me every few months to check-in and see how I'm doing. During our last call he essentially offered a job after I get another year of experience in private practice. Five year track to partnership. No billable hours.

What is a material billable hours difference from your peers at the same group? If I bill 150 less a year than another associate should I be worried?
