Any advice on dealing with “work from home”? Aside from execution/writing/production time...isn’t it important to be working together anymore? I like the energy & brainstorming. Makes things better.

I’ve been working exclusively from home for two years. It is still just as important to “work together” and we do, we just don’t do it in person. Every meeting is video conference. When face-to-face time is more precious, it also becomes more purposeful—I’m amazed at how much time we used to waste without even realizing it. We have just as much fun and energy on conference and honestly you forget you haven’t seen some of these people in person in months, or ever! In between video meetings, we use chat. I’m more productive, efficient and happier than I’ve ever been. I also feel more in sync with my team, since working from afar requires everyone to be present. You can’t exactly sit in the back of the room and mindlessly cruise Instagram when your face is on a big screen. I know exactly where you’re coming from, but then I did it, and it’s wholly changed the way I view teamwork and work. Try it!

Try to figure out why some people (all people?) on your team are asking to work from home. Is it every day? Is there something about the process/office environment that makes it hard to focus on work? Do they just live far away and would rather spend the commute time thinking? You may be able to work out a balance that keeps everyone happy (i.e. work from home during idea development, spend meeting days in the office brainstorming and working face to face.)

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I can see the positive in your examples and it should be interesting to explore this area.

I like a mix personally. But the big thing for me with working from home is I have a lot of trouble focusing in an open plan office. I get very distracted and irritated by the conversations around me. So once my partner and I have established a solid game plan I like to just work through things at home.

depends on the agency. some cd partners work without teams. i haven’t worked with a partner for years. just work directly with a couple jr-mid level copywriter, and a mid level design and art director. they concept together. i break off for a bit. then we figure it out in a room. and it done and approved. writers and i ping pong scripts. i break the art direction up between myself and the AD. and the designer is a photo shop wizard. what would take weeks. takes days. granted that just means we work on way more assignments.

+1 on the open plan office today. It has been the singularly most destructive force to true creativity I can think of. People need a place to think, a wall to pin work on, and a door to close out distractions. Don’t @ me.

I work with my partner over slack a lot. We actually do better work that way. But I agree - however they do it most productively - people need to work together. Some of our younger teams were working alone and then coming together and trying to piece things together from their disparate thoughts. That does not make for good creative.

Feeling really paralyzed and immobilized due to work (not sure if I articulated that well). Work is giving me so much anxiety that I’ve been procrastinating for 2 days. I’m extremely overwhelmed and feel anxious all the time. Wfh isn’t helping. Spent 10 AM - 7 PM in bed. Planning to take some meds and sleep till the morning.

What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.
