Any advice on getting a Data Scientist position at a consulting company? Or even a private company? What steps should I take? Got my masters in analytics fall of last year. It “helped” get me in at Accenture... (a year this August) but not doing anything near what I studied or interested in. Any advice on transitioning within Accenture as well? I’m interested in data & analytics strategy. Prior to accenture worked 2 1/2 years doing compliance audits.

What kind of work are you doing now? What kind of push back have you gotten when trying to get onto an analytics project?

Probably need to go around your talent fulfillment person and network into a project. We complain about having to do firm initiatives a lot at Deloitte, but they can be a good way to get involved in projects you are interested in. If you have stuff like that at Accenture I would look into it as well.

In terms of pure “data science” that you learned in school - there is a lot less than you might think. On the spectrum of analytics to data science - a lot of what is called data science is closer to traditional analytics.

not to sound like an old curmudgeon - you need some time in the saddle. if you’re not unhappy, I’d stay at accenture at least 2-3 years. see if you can land some DS work there or at least build your experience. there’s a disconnect of knowledge between what you’re taught in school and the real world applications of DS. I’m guessing you’re 26-27 ?

25....I hear you... and you’re right... I think I’m feeling like I have so much more to offer ... so I’m frustrated... but I definitely will connect more with people who are doing that work and building a rapport to be considered

Hey everyone. I found out we are expecting our first child and I’m really nervous. I got into consulting one year ago and I’m up for promotion this year. With timing of our performance conversations I would have to inform I’m pregnant before outcomes - then shortly after the promotion effective date I would go on a leave for due date. I’ve worked really hard and I’m worried our wonderful news will throw chances with this :(- also if I don’t get promoted pretty sure it’s up or out. Any advice?

Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? The single session is all I'm asking but could certainly turn into a longer lasting coaching relationship (at no cost), if you like.

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time
