Any advice on getting a job as a Software Engineer after a coding bootcamp? After watching videos, I was told to apply for every position whether it be a senior position or not and I’ve applied for 40+ jobs with either no callbacks or the companies saying they’ve moved on.

It takes patience…it took me about a year and a half to find a job in my field as a newbie to the industry…just keep pushing, and keep practicing your skill, even that looks good to someone who is interviewing if you have no prior experience. Good luck!

I am not a software engineer, but I was talking to a cyber security friend the other day who mentioned that education requirements are going up for computer science and software jobs (we were comparing changing education requirements in our different fields). Maybe most of those companies are looking for people with computer science degrees? I’m really curious what others say though.

On applying for jobs from someone who used to be in HR: we can tell if you rush through our application, make sure with that volume you’re still showing real interest in that company and specific role. Also it’s aggravating for the people who sort through applications when you apply for jobs you’re clearly not qualified for (ie you’re fresh out of school and we need a people manager with 5 or 10 yrs experience).

Keep in mind that you should tailor your resume for every company and application you submit to match keywords based on what they are looking for ( Sounds like a lot but it helps). Too often resumes are submitted that look like many others and will not reach the recruiters as it never makes it to the internal system.

Your resume should peak someone's interest based in the information in there. Don't make it too long and add detailed information with quantity showing your capabilities to the max. This is coming from someone who has interviewed a lot of people in my career.

Also networking is way more important. Go to LinkedIn find someone doing the job at the company and message them. Ask if you could talk as you are interested and want to really understand what the job entails. Build a relationship so that this individual might approach the hiring manager with your name and your resume is then pulled. A referral can get you an interview pretty quickly.

When I refer someone my manager would contact the recruiter and ask for their resume to be pulled and they would be submitted for an interview. This is also based on that person's impact and willingness to give you a helping hand.

Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

Thank you both so much for your replies. They are extremely helpful and I will keep that in mind when I apply for more. 🙏🏼

Usually a coding boot camp is good enough for a developer job, but not for a software engineer. Software engineers require more education and usually a lot more knowledge of data structures and optimization methods

Awesome. Thank you. I will start targeting more Developer titles in my searches

If you can't find a referral here, I would try over on Linked in. I usually have good luck over there! Best of luck to you.

Hi,

Anyone who recently got an offer from MS, can you please advise how long the interview process is?

I read in Glassdoor that some recent offers took 1-2 months to roll out. Is that common?

For me it has been 3 weeks since my third (final) hiring manager round hence wanted to know if others had similar experience.

Thank you!

Peers or at the top aside from those in HR/diversity and in addition to dealing with the day to day reality of being a POC in corporate America, its hard to visualize a path to “the top”.
