SAME SAME SAME. I am a first year.
Following because I want to switch from corporate to employment...
Not that you should freeze out your current group, but the real trick is going to be building relationships in the group you want to transfer to, and them having a lot of work and need, and your current group NOT having a lot of work and need, so the corporate partners don’t avoid hiring you so as to avoid pissing off their litigation partners. Is your firm hiring for junior corporate ? How did you end up in litigation, did you ask for it and change your mind or were you just assigned ?
Helpful to get involved with firm committees etc so you can build relationships outside of just your group. Come up with a strong reason why you want to be in corporate. Expect for no one to care about whatever experience/classes etc you have from law school. You’re basically trying to get hired as a brand new first year in corporate but you have the advantage of being “pre-vetted” by the firm but that’s pretty much it. Also do not be surprised if they ask you to take a class year cut (if they entertain at all). You’ll probably have better luck switching practice groups by switching firms, but maybe worth a try at your current place.
I told my supervising partner that I wanted to try out another practice area - I was in shipping litigation and wanted to try ship/project financing. It wasn't a complete switch as my case load became half and half during the try-out period.
Ended up not liking it so went back to full time shipping litigation work after about 6 months.
Do y’all have someone in the firm you can go to? We have a consultant that has those types of discussions and gives you the advice on who how best to approach, which is based off of the personalities and people involved. Also, it’s important to first find out if the other group is willing to take you. If you have a good relationship with a mid- level or senior associate they may be able to give you firm specific advice on how best to handle.
