Any advice/tips on finding junior in-house roles? Thoughts on Contract manager positions as a way to eventually get there?

At my company they generally won’t even bother looking at lawyers for those positions, and even if they do hire someone who happens to have a JD there would be close to zero expectation that they ever move over to the actual legal track.

I wouldnt bet on contracts manager as an easy way there. I've seen the transition take a second or third job from that role to get there.

This was actually my path into an in-house career. My first role out of law school was as a contract manager, and afterwards I moved around to new positions at different companies every 2-3 years. In my experience, it was very hard to find organic growth into a more senior role/to be promoted from within when I was more junior (possibly because many of the companies I worked for were a bit top heavy). Now, I'm about 10 years out of law school and I'm incredibly happy with where I am.

I just hired a contract manager with intent to promote to associate counsel if they prove themselves a bit. But it’s a lot more likely at smaller companies without as rigorous a track. My last hire told me she couldn’t get promoted from contract manager at [really huge well known company] because the company flat out doesn’t hire junior lawyers, so there was nowhere to get promoted to — all roles required 5+ years lawyer experience

Many in house roles want you to be independent. Many juniors are not independent/dont have enough experience to have a gut on how to proceed with things. So find the places that want 1-3 years if experience and pursue those.

Goinhouse.com, ACC and ABA jobboards are good places, in addition to LinkedIn and you local bar assns.

And networking trumps online apps every time.

Are you finding it hard getting call backs after you apply for in-house roles or are you getting call backs but just not making it to the offer stage?

@Senior Instructor Of course. Happy to help however I can.

I wouldn’t put much effort into contracts manager positions. Depends on the company, but at many, they are a no legal track … and appear to have little upward mobility.

Feel free to DM, we're looking for a JR counsel this month. WLB is very good, pay may be less than you expect.

Hi! Are you still looking? If so I’d love to send you a dm.

There’s no such thing as a perfect job.

I know there are definitely worse out there so it’s hard to put my foot down and resign, I could just stick it out for a year but am feeling demotivated and too exhausted to do anything else but sleep after hours/weekends. Have you ever started working somewhere and although nothing overtly wrong or terrible about the place / colleagues, it just didn’t feel like the right fit & if so, what did you do?

Any strong feelings against going in-house in a junior corporate counsel role? I am currently interviewing at Assurance IQ and Smartsheet, and I'm excited about them both.

FWIW, I'm at a boutique law firm, and while there is still lots of learning I could do, I don't think the niche is a good fit, and all signs are telling me to leave. I'm a 2019 grad, did a year-long state clerkship, and have been at this firm for just under 1.5 years.

I’m interviewing and considering leaving the law and nice in-house job (work 20-30hrs/week, clocking out at 5pm, no evening or weekend work, comp $215k, doing mainly commercial, though not much mobility) for a business-side role within the cap markets team at a fund doing structured finance. Many unknowns, but comp will be at least $400 base, $200 bonus, soon managing a team and serious career progression, more hours/week (TBD how much), plus deal driven. Any thoughts on making this switch?
