Attention to detail. Advise vs advice, for instance
You’ll hear a lot of advice, but here are mine in no particular order...
1. Take the time to learn what everyone on your team does as quickly as possible
2. listen to your clients, and learn what they like. Allow them to feel a personal connection to you without you over sharing
3. When you go to team and staff meetings, be on time, but wait to see where everyone sits first before you choose your seat. This matters a lot to some people
4. Be helpful and ask questions when you don’t know something or need clarification
5. Always carry a notebook and pen
6. Stand up when someone approaches your desk, whether they’re a client, your CEO or the building custodian
7. Dress sharp, feel sharp
8. Set boundaries as soon as possible
9. Never stop asking for advice
Make impact as soon as you can so you can get promoted fast 🙂
Don’t tell your team everything you can do
Point taken 😌
Don't be the first person to talk
Assuming you're junior, here's some advice:
-Take initiative and volunteer for the necessary grunt work; note, there is a distinction between necessary and pointless grunt work...stuff like volunteering to be the POC for client onboarding paperwork is good, random stuff not so much
-Ask questions of those who're more senior or have been on the project for a while
-Try to find a new hire mentor if you don't already have one
-Don't be afraid to speak up
-Ask your leadership if there's any BD/initiatives you can help with
-Be a sponge for any and all documentation/institutional knowledge on the client and the project goal
-Volunteer to help organize/coordinate team activities
-Ask your A/LA/SA (whoever your project supervisor and skip are) if there's anything you can do to help them beyond your swimlane
-If you're a local-ish college hire, see if you can get involved in recruiting (e.g. W&M alums have a huge presence at BAH, at least on the civ side). Unless your leadership is involved, it won't have anything to do with your project work, but is a great way to get exposure to lots of people up to senior leadership (P/VP+) levels, depending on how big the recruiting initiative is
Whatever you do, be the best at it. Doesn’t matter if you’re directing high level strategy or if you’re an excel monkey — be the best damn excel monkey anyone has ever seen. People will notice your work ethic and ask you to come work for them. I’ve gotten tons of offers to join projects I’m not even remotely qualified for because people know that regardless of what it is, I’ll give 110%.
Be kind to all and remember to not take criticism personally. It’s just work.
Super good advice
