Wow CD1 you seem very cool.
Ask your friend to look into agencies that has a fashion/luxury focus, like Laird and Partners, they usually want people with fashion background. Or if the brand she/he works for now has a in-house ad department and make an internal move first to build a book.
Since you’re nice enough to seek tips for a friend, I’ll give you a free tip: get off that sinking cesspool of a ship that is droga5 before it drags you down to the bottom with it. Use the decent cred it still has while it still has some
I've done both. Had to learn everything from scratch though. Start from the bottom and work, work, work.
Umm ... what?
You realize they’re ENTIRELY separate disciplines, right?
Just because you made something that looks nice in one creative arena does not mean you’ll be equally successful in another when it is judged through entirely different lenses.
This works in reverse, too, just so no one thinks I’m out here throwing shade at fashion designers. I do not have those skills.
You would need to likely start with an internship at one of the famed houses of fashion, if you want to do high end stuff. If you want to do street wear I’d just start making stuff. CD1 may have been a bit brash, but they aren’t wrong. If you have good taste, I’m sure you’ll be able to do okay, but I would anticipate starting from the bottom. Good luck!
The question was about how to transition. If the person thought it was the same thing they wouldn’t have that question.
Depends on the agency and the client. I went from working at a fashion house to being a designer for a fashion client at an agency. Then AD assistant on another type of client, not fashion, and the AD, CD etc.
Thank you ECD 1. Sounds like solid advice Much appreciated!
Thx AD 1 and ECD 1. To be clear, I’m asking about people with a fashion background going to a creative agency. Realize it would likely mean starting at the bottom but still doesn’t seem totally impossible. I guess I’m wondering what the tangible first steps might be. Eg do you try and build an ad book or can you get entry level with a fashion book, or is there some other move I’m missing?
