I think it would really depend on the company.. I went in to a senior financial reporting role (wasn’t a B4 manager at the time) at a smaller public company and it was really not that difficult to pick up at all, and the pressure was way less. A stressful day there would have been a great day at pwc.. so I wouldn’t worry to much about needing someone to oversee your work
Yeah actually I did. It paid 25k more than my manager job and was a high visibility role for a growing tech company so I decided to go for it. I definitely don't think titles are reflective of the job in a lot of cases. I am doing some staff accountant things, like account recs and accrual JEs and I don't have anyone reporting to me. However, I also have implemented some process improvements and SOX controls and am writing white papers. So it's a nice mix of challenging and not so challenging work. I report directly to the corporate controller who is under the CAO. I will say that coming from audit, I didn't have as strong of an accounting background that some of my counterparts in industry do but I think my boss knows that and tries to play on my strengths in other ways (i.e. good at research, experienced in controls). I agree with you though that I wouldn't have felt 100% confident stepping into an accounting manager role without someone overseeing me so this was a nice stepping stone for me. I would just make sure there is a clear path for advancement and that you will be challenged enough so you don't get bored.
