I feel you. Honestly the best way to build assertiveness/confidence is to have a boss/mentor/role model/peer role model who a) brings that confidence in you (“YOU have what it takes, I know it”) and b) whose style and personality you can mimic and play with.
I’m a big consumer of these books but they’re never as effective as a human who influences you...repetitively. It’s like a workout. You don’t build muscle that one time you use weights. It needs repetition and constant exposure.
I know exactly which managers whose personalities I mimicked unconsciously and helped me build my assertiveness.
Seeing them say “No way” to push back on a timeline has helped me say “No way” - I would’ve never had the confidence to say it on my own. “You can’t be what you can’t see.”
If I were you, I would find a work friend(s) who you find assertive and confident and spend time with them. Catch up on a zoom call, ask them about how they deal with certain situations. See how they act. Take notes. And try practicing. They’re incredibly inspiring and effective. Maybe even start a peer mentorship group with at least 1 or 2 other people. They could learn from you too, on being empathetic and having good social skills for example.
This is great. Thank you
I saw this on IG the other day. Assertiveness is like confidence in that a lot of people think it comes naturally, when much of the time it is a conscious choice to be made over and over.
💓 Thank you
