Several of our creative leads have asked to direct spots over the years, and the truth is, many of them are incredibly talented and would probably do as good or better than the directors we hire... but that being said, the problem I always face when working w/ an agency creative as a director on a shoot is that they don’t have time for all the pre-pro work. The day of the shoot is easy, but a director needs to commit days or weeks for prep. Location scouting, casting review, working on boards, looking as props and wardrobe options, all these things take time and focus, something few creative directors that work on multiple accounts have anymore.
