Any Christian 🐠 out there? The culture in this line of work seems to directly clash with our values. It’s tough.

PwC4, that sounds bitter and jaded. At Deloitte we can consciously object to being staffed on a project. Shouldn't be used often, but we can do that. Goes both ways, of course - you could object to working for a Christian client like Hobby Lobby if you feel they violate your conscience as a progressive. So not just a religious carveout. My biggest challenge has been becoming focused on things like status, points, money, and especially looking down on others who don't have or don't care about these things. That and the workaholic lifestyle this tends to be. Working 70-80h/wk at this level of mental engagement makes it hard to shift your brain and take time out for prayer, etc. No easy answers. A year after joining Deloitte (exp hire), my wife and I took 2 weeks to backpack in Utah. (Highly recommend.) It took me 3 days to unwind and leave work behind. Given that, it's hard to switch off work on a daily or even weekly basis.

Work at firm that embodies your values and is consistent with your religious beliefs. Our 1+1+1 program to share profits, talents, and time acknowledges our corporate responsibility to give back to our communities. Our Fischer Fellowship Program allows our people to go out and do great work in the world. I don’t feel a calling to work in Nepal — but I am thankful that I work at a firm that invests in these programs. Acknowledge that your skills and ability to do hard work are gifts from God and God wants you to use your talents to their fullest. Use the rewards from that work in terms of money and talents to help others less fortunate than you. Treat people the way your faith requires. Give extra support and attention to those who do not have the privileges you have. I see the people I am developing at work and the work done at church and non profits using the money I earned and talents I shared more rewarding than the balance in my checkbook. Others in our profession do not work that way, but that does not mean I have to motivated the same way they do.

People seem to spend so much time and energy worrying about prestige, compensation, promotions etc. I know I’m guilty of it too... but worshipping these worldly things is against God.

likefunnyuplifting

Is this a joke or are you being serious?

likeupliftingfunny

Sorry OP.... This post made me roll my eyes 👀... it’s true we aren’t saving lives here... it could bother anyone, whether you are Christian or not. This post seems a little sanctimonious

like

For those of you insulting or mocking OP, just stop. You don’t understand the question likely because you don’t understand the sincerity, passion and grace in which it is offered. OP and others - thanks for sharing. I’ve found that celebrating and linking with those who cared about people and value (eg actually doing good work) was the best way to balance faith and function. I’ve been blessed with a great number of clients and colleagues who have shared their faith with me - and not all Christian - which has helped build relationships and fortify my own faith. Be authentic, true and sincere ... and only do what you are comfortable doing. We need more people who will say no to the wrong thing

Pretty sure Jesus wouldn’t be partner material

Yes. Can you be more specific with the clash you see?

Atheist here. I see so much greed in Christian politicians. And in this profession and everywhere. Agree you need to do whatever you can to give back, find meaning. For me, it's by doing right by the client, the individuals I help, the money I can donate, and my ability to educate my kids. And I like the work. The ups and downs give that little jolt of dopamine that keeps me going (guess I need it since there is no God I can see bestowing it on me). 😂

like

C1 I didn’t mean it like that at all. I just wanted to see how other Christians feel about it since my faith in Christ is the lens through which I see the entire world! But I apologize if I came off as sanctimonious (great diction btw).

Yup. It’s a fine balance. I was lucky to have leads who grew up with Christian values so it helped me to some degree. If the way you interact with others and the way you put forth deliverables (doing what’s right for your client) embody the traits of Christ—and you’re not comprising integrity while also respecting your lead(s) even if he/she can be a monster—you are doing your best to be a good steward.

Not Christian or Catholic and find this struggle is real. Purpose in this profession is hard bc we make rich corporations richer. I reconcile it through charitable donations and influence through my company’s charitable events but agree would love to do more good for the world daily

I grew up Catholic and I strongly cherish our values of compassion for fellow people. I do my best to do that inside my firm and also outside the firm in my volunteer time. But I have no shame in admitting that oftentimes I put material needs in front of spiritual needs. It’s disingenuous to pretend that advancement and accomplishment don’t matter to us. Where I try to strike the balance is whether or not I let that be all-consuming in the way I interact with clients, colleagues, friends and family, and people in the community.

OP, you are not alone. I have been all over in my 20 year career, national and.imternational. Worked in academics, Christian non-profits, with missionaries, and tech/marketing consulting. Consulting by far is the hardest to deal with in terms of losing your Christian identity, but jobs in the Christian sector tend to emphasize scoring fake Jesus points ("it's all about the ministry"). In the end I found it super important to stay grounded. As for myself, I married a Christian, am an elder at my church (usually can make weekend services), and stay introspective. Also have a lot of Christian friends who really are annoyed by talk of money, loyalty points and status, etc. They want to talk about God and life and the stuff that really matters. It's possible to serve God in pretty much any profession, of course. This one really tends to bring the Mammon to bear. Always open to chat. hrsej@slipry.net

Many of the responses on this post illustrate the issues Christians face. Mocking our faith, calling us hypocrites. OP, you raise an excellent point. But please ignore the trolls.

I feel like my firm embodies the basic tenants well--we do our best to treat others (coworkers, clients, etc.) Well and do our best work. Yes, $ and prestige are major earthly goals.. but my view point lies in the fact that the gifts I've been blessed with put me in this line of work for a reason. Stay humble, stay kind, and keep the faith. It's a struggle for me mainly due to stress/work life balance, but it's important to keep at it. Always willing to talk about it :) fishy.anon@gmail.com
