Stg if I hear one more person say “high level”….
I hate this copy
You’re probably right and they’re probably wrong. I don’t know you. But it’s worth at least considering the possibility that while you have great writing skills you need to work on your leadership and communication skills, and that there are ways to convey the exact same information to colleagues in a way that won’t be interpreted as intense. You owe it to your future self to consider that possibility.
Yes. I got this type of feedback for years until i realized i could let go and let other people have their way if they have a reason why they prefer their copy. And then it becomes we as a team work together. You can own brand voice by acting as support for whoever the team member is and convincing them the two of you are working together on it. For far too long i was very precious about the copy. But copy isn’t precious, it doesn’t care, most people don’t care, you care but likely need to let go just a bit.
Unfortunately this is typical of startups and especially tech startups, the founders are often engineers or MBAs who overestimate their expertise on everything. I have a copy background and have worked in the Bay Area for years for tech clients. This story is pretty common. “Owning the brand voice” ends up being owning proofreading. Sorry it sucks, but it’s them, not you. If it’s a startup up in a growth industry maybe stick it out, it will be worth something down the road.
Oof. Sounds like you’re too good at your job hahaha, as if that’s a thing. Sorry you’re being gaslit, that 100% sucks. I don’t think I’m going to be alone in my opinion of- you should start looking for a company that will value you and your ideas. Since, that is, after all, what they hired you for. Best of luck!
Hi, I worked at a tech company (a big one) and left. It was horrible. The problem is that good enough is good enough. People at tech companies to work there to produce creativity. They work there for about a million other reasons e.g. develop a product. Everybody was just resting and vesting. I left, back in ad world and happier then ever. It was a welcome break.
People don’t work there to produce creativity *
Hahah. Yeah this is getting more common. Team player > your actual skills
What does "coming off as too intense when providing copy edits" mean?
I hate to admit this, but I instantly assumed 1. Confident, 2. Direct and 3. Female.
But anyone passionate could come off as too intense.
Yep. Stick it out and in the meantime look for something else
At tech companies and client side in general creative is not king. Less respect. But hopefully better money and hours.
