Yep, have twin 10 month olds. I wfh, so I can help out from time to time during the day. My partner watches them during the day (we’ll be getting a nanny soon, so she can get back to her business), and we can go out for walks midday, they join meetings occasionally, and my colleagues/boss are totally cool with it. Most of them have young families too, so they get it. It can be harder for people with older kids to remember and understand, so if that’s who you’ll be around maybe have an honest discussion with them. Other than that, I’m making full use of my unlimited pto, benefits, etc. to make the best life for my family and I. I wouldn’t trade the ability to be able to be with my kids as they grow up for anything.
I think it will really vary by company. At a FAANG I interviewed with, I was told the hours are intense, but less than at a firm. At the place I just accepted an offer from, I was uniformly told hours are 9-6, laid back culture. You’ve got to ask during the interview process and gauge for yourself whether you think you’re getting accurate information.
I have four kiddos and my WLB is great, I have flexibility during the day and only work nights/weekends if I choose to or on rare occasions when last minute issues pop up.

My wlb is great. Pop upstairs from my at-home office all the time, midday walks when it is quiet. On a few occasions I have had to watch our daughter (toddler) the entire day while working and I have not had any issues, even when joining meetings. The expectation is not to work past 5pm and not let departments try and drop things on you last minute. Coming from firm life, I am happy to work late to help someone meet his/her/their numbers, while being equally happy to ignore their email if I want to be done at 5pm. I imagine this varies from company to company--and especially what phase the company is in (e.g., explosive growth, etc). Like others have said, just ask during the interview phase. You will get a very good idea of what the culture is like from the answers you receive. Going in-house has been a dream for me, will never go back to a firm if I can help it.
Thanks everyone for the great responses! Please keep them coming. I work for a wonderfully supportive team of attorneys now who understand the challenges of working full time and raising young children. Would be moving to the unknown and have heard startup/tech culture can be intense. Your comments are very appreciated and helpful.
My wlb at faang has been up and down. Some 40 hr weeks, some 80+ hour weeks. Generous PTO if you can take it (I literally had to take a day last week bc I would stop accruing otherwise). I have four kids and agree there is some flexibility, but often meetings are scheduled over time I have blocked off to get my kids or make dinner. However I’m on the east coast so the time zone doesn’t favor me due to most folks being in California.
