Any data scientists here whose day to day doesn’t involve much ML and is more focused on analyzing/visualizing metrics? I’m coming from a role that’s v heavy in predictive modeling (which I like), and I’m interviewing at a social media company with a team that focuses more on analyzing the outputs of a modeling team. Is it hard to switch to a more ML heavy role later on?

Sales engineers, or any one in a Presales tech engineer role. How do you deal with a sales rep who used to be a a sales engineer? I know that is vague. I have been doing this for a while. I even dabbled in multiple sales roles at smaller companies. My issue is not agreeing with their approach at times. It could be a clash mostly in style. Might be my ego. Just wanted to a chat going. Side note. I mentor folks who are starting as SEs but sometimes the mentor needs to be the mentee.

I have made huge progress in my current role where I make (65k) yearly and have been with for almost a year. It’s a WFH position but I have to attend the conferences I lead. Due to the immense workload I have been taking on, I asked my manager if I would be considered to be promoted to a manager position they are hiring for (who will be doing the same thing I am doing) She told me to wait another year since that is where they are aiming to push me towards. I feel demotivated but I love it here.

He said the comp budget is up to 240k, which seems really high for this type of role. I am noticing that McKinsey is increasingly recruiting at non-elite schools (very roughly speaking not top 15 schools). At my old undergrad, 5 years ago the most competitive firm to show up was EY. This year McKinsey took 4 non-internship full hires. Why is McKinsey going “down market” for recruiting? Are elite school kids losing interest in consulting so McK has to cast a wider net? Or is McK seeking a wider pool for other reasons? I advise undergrads on consulting so want to be best informed.

I think I am experiencing the stages of a mental breakdown. I do not feel like myself. I can fake the smile and cheer for the few meetings I have - and occasionally for friends or family in small bursts. But I feel overwhelming anxiety and depression and am becoming more prone to outbursts. I just want to quit everything and burn it all to the ground. I’m not sure what the main triggers are but am feeling lost and hopeless.

Why I love being in industry: I presented a deck and I misspelled "EBITDA" in the exec summary while presenting to the exec team. No one noticed. No one called me out. No one gave me a nasty glance. No one sent a "pls call my mobile" text after. No email with some stuff about "not meeting expectations" or "how could you let this happen in your role". After the wave of panic, I remembered that I'm in industry now. I make more money, work less hours, work with great people, I'm happy.

Woke up at 5am to prepare for presentations and was sucked into endless calls until 8:00 my presentation is at 8:15. grool.

Post-Covid, I just cannot seem to find the inspiration to network at a conference such as the AWS DC summit. I initially wanted to get facetime with vendors to check out potential job openings. But it just feels like a large circle jerk where no productive work gets done. And besides all keynote addresses are recorded and available online anyway.
