Any Denver attorneys here have advice on how to break into the market? I live and work in NYC, but have Midwestern roots and want to move somewhere more sane (and mountainous)

Not hard to break in. Lots of transplants in the market. Along with great work, reasonable hours and a vibrant city with a strong economy and legal market.

I made the move Denver 2 years ago from big law in NYC (litigation/employment). I had a recruiter, but having now made the move, you definitely don’t need one. Let me know if you’d like to chat further.

What year are you and what’s your practice area? I work at a firm in Denver who is looking to hire.

Look for firms with offices in Denver and call their recruiting people. We have multi-practice offices in Denver and Boulder.

Does anyone ever just interview for the sake of interviewing, without the intention of taking the offer?

To stay in touch with the market and your value, To practice and get better at interviewing, To meet new people and network?

It definitely feel wrong bc you’re wasting people’s time, but don’t companies waste our times too? I feel like it may be an underrated tool for personal development. Thoughts?

When your firm requires billable hours, how are they calculated? Actual vs realized (I.e. what you put on your billing sheet vs what is billed to the client). Does your firm differentiate? Which number do they go by? My mind is somehow not comprehending how some big law hours are under my small firm requirement?

I applied & interviewed at a small firm in JUNE. I thought it went well & the owner & I knew each other from previous cases we handled. They ghosted me so I moved on. Mid November comes & I get a call from the paralegal “are you still looking for a job?” I thought that ship sailed but let’s see what they offer. It’s the holidays & I’ve got time off already scheduled. They’ve made a tempting offer but are not flexible on the time off & seem desperate. Like they want someone to put out fires.

Can anyone give me insight on how important it is to like your practice area? I finished up a clerkship in 2020 when then market was terrible and felt pressure to take the first job I was offered. It was in litigation, which I wanted, but it’s also construction law which I am finding to be majorly boring. I’m 7 months in and not very happy and I’m wondering if that’s why? (It could also be the low salary, the billable hours, the intangible but definitely present boys club, etc).

My boss suggested if I considered staying he could make me of counsel with partner in like next 1.5 years or so. Overall, I like where I’m at but this new gig would allow me to lead the practice area in 3 states which is greater scope than my current. Which position and title looks better on your resume?

I think I made a mistake becoming an attorney. I am way too stupid for this. As in I lack the ability to make the simplest logical decisions or rational choices. I guess it’s time to find a career more fitting my mental capabilities.
