How do those of you working as independent contractors land projects? I've just gone through agencies so far, doing my best to weed out the sketchy/stingy ones. I know of some of the big consulting firm talent boards for contractors, but haven't had any luck with those so far. There aren't a ton of projects on those.
usebraintrust.com seems like an interesting model in cutting out the middleman. Unfortunatey, I didn't do good enough on the interview.

I interviewed for a role at Google in the past. I’m not one but here’s is the impression I got:
- it’s really fun! I spoke to 8ish Dev Advocates and they all universally love their job. Some even had a stint in PM and came back.
- depends. Some do, others don’t. Feels like it’s very team/company dependent but more so depends on the org’s current objectives. You’re primarily demystifying stuff for outside devs and driving adoption.
- most fall into it. It’s been around as a field for a while though. I applied for one specific devrel job which I didn’t get 😥.
Hope this helps!
Good luck OP with the new path if you decide to go down it!
How long have you been pursuing the path you’re currently on?
1 year. Graduated in 2020 (soft eng), I had a few tech support internships which I enjoyed because I got to help people and talk to people on a daily basis but there wasn’t enough programming. I feel like I need a balance, which is why I’m curious about the developer advocate roles.
Never heard od a developer advocate. What's that role about?
I think their role is to support other developers who are trying to use the companies tools. Either by writing documentation, creating tutorial videos, leading events e.t.c
