A lot of haters on here... Not everyone is born with personal financial management skills. In any case, if you want to stop borrowing, start by tracking what you spend. You need to see where your money is going before you can make an informed decision about what to change. I use a spreadsheet I made that tracks recurring monthly expenses that I budget for (rent, gas, food, student loans, etc.). There are tools out there like Mint, that someone mentioned. They key is to be honest and track everything... Every cent... For at least a month. Then you can figure out if cutting your daily Starbucks back is enough, or if you have a bigger problem.

like

OP forget the haters here but the message is a budget is required first. You also need to keep a track of all your expenses. I mean write it down so you own it (mint and other apps can come later). Use cash so you know how much you can spend. No one on this thread became a financial pro overnight. We all learned from our mistakes. It's just that no one will admit it. Get control over your finances and don't be afraid to tell your friends you can't go drinking because you simply can't afford it and that you are trying to save. You need friends who won't judge you when you say something like that.

Grow up and learn to budget and live within your means. As a consultant I am sure you get paid enough to not have to ask your parents for money if you can make sensible spending decisions. If you need help r/personalfinance is where you should be.

Alright fuck you guys

Agreed with D1. You have piss poor money management skills if you're making consultant wages and still asking your parents for money. People manage to fend for themselves on half of our salary. I second the personal finance subreddit recommendation. Start with the FAQ

If you have a 70k+ salary and you're still mooching off your parents then you're a spoiled brat

OP get your shit together and grow up. You asked and we're telling you this isn't the norm. Reign in your spending and quit being a mooch.

I recall this one analyst who I stared with, she rented an apartment in NYC with $2900 in rent and no roommates. She would easily spend about a $1000-1500 on clothing and makeup a month. Yeah she was crazy and would make me cringe so much.

You sure that's not OP D1?

I'm in my early twenties and I SEND my parents $500/month. Unless you're in hundreds of thousands of dollars of student debt, I have zero sympathy for you.

like

@OP just stop posting. You're only making yourself look bad. Most people on this thread have already lost respect for you because of your inability to live like a responsible adult and actually save some money.

like

Quick question, are you one of those kids who breast fed until you were five?

YOU'RE A BAD PERSON, OP. Those poor parents of yours...

I didn't ask for the "I'm better than you" responses, I asked for individuals in similar situations.

Since I started, I've had to ask my parents for money due to an unexpected health emergency. But that instance was the only time. I would have been able to pay it myself if I had been saving, but instead I have been paying more than is required for my student loans to diminish the principle. But every family dynamic is different and while you may want to consider being more prudent with finances, it's no ones business to judge you for using a safety net you are very fortunate to have,l. Hopefully you express appreciation to them regularly 🙂

Any insight into what NY Biglaw counsel positions pay? I imagine it varies but I think my firm may be majorly lowballing with basically just senior associate salary. Bonuses are likely just top of associate scale too so max $100k. I hear people leaving for much higher paid counsel spots elsewhere so curious.

Hi, I have a 1 year old. Married for 2 years but together since 10 years ago.

We have been one of those couples that like ,respect and admire each other; and are basically good lovers, friends and partners.
Now something is wrong. Is not the baby, She is never a reason to be irritated, she is pretty much the best of our day.
We barely talk. We don’t do plans alone (always with friends). He is less and less caring. I get irritated every time. Sex is infrequent. Anyone relates to this?

Spouse and I live in a 1bd apartment but want a little more space so we can both wfh more comfortably. Any ideas on how to find 1bd+den/office apts by June 30? Looking for 2bd apts is easy because of bedroom filters on many sites but 2bd places feel unnecessarily expensive for what we need. Loop, river north, south loop might be ideal.
