I went from EA to Chief of Staff. What is needed really depends on the CoS role, which varies from company to company. For my role, I had a Master's in Organizational Leadership, which was helpful. I did wish I had more of a finance background and had to learn a few things on the fly. As a Chief of Staff, I was an EA to the CEO and General Counsel, but also managed the annual budget and oversaw the team that worked the acquisition of some facilities - basically ensuring that everyone was sticking to the timeline for deliverables, working out any roadblocks, and reporting back to the CEO. I don't know that an MBA is necessary - but may be depending on the role. Each CofS role is unique. Feel free to DM me if you like.
I would be very interested in hearing about this too! Did you take any courses? Ive heard that Chief of Staff roles come easier if you have completed an MBA. Is that the case?
Love this question-would also love to hear from people who went from EA to more project manager type roles!
