Any employee benefits attorneys? How did you break into the practice area? Any resources you recommend to learn this area of law?

I am a 2nd year and I am soo happy I chose this over M&A. It’s a specialist area so its nice to only be responsible for one piece rather than the whole thing. I also like having substantive knowledge about the law rather than be a generalist. This way, i can be an “expert” in this one thing and contribute meaningfully. I knew nothing about it until i got recruited as a summer associate. Most firms train you and it’s not hard to learn. Like everything else, there’s pros and cons. If you like tracking equity and compensation then this is your spot. But if the idea of tax laws and numbers scare you, then totally not for you lol

like

Thank you! Yes, it sounds very specialized. I already practice employment law, but I’m looking to learn employee benefits as my speciality. Thanks so much for the insight!

like

Yes - it’s an awesome field. I’ve found that some firms recruit from good tax LLM programs but the best way is to just show an interest and contact the EBEC attorneys in your firm.

Good information to have. Thank you!

If you’re looking for ERISA, you won’t find it at most big firms. They do very little ERISA work. They focus on equity comp. I think if you’re lucky 20-25% of your work at a large firm will be ERISA-adjacent. Most likely you will be a deal specialist who knows what a 401(k) and cafeteria plan look like, but your bread and butter will be in equity comp

like

This is very insightful, thank you! I wouldn’t mind the 401K and cafeteria plan work, and have done a bit of it at EY.

Let me just say as an in house attorney responsible for employment and benefits if you don’t have a firm background in benefits and erisa it is a very difficult area to learn. There is not a lot of guidance out there and I keep asking my outside counsel for things so I can learn and there isn’t much other than a potential pli cle

That’s helpful thanks!

My firm is hiring for exec comp. DM me if interested! They’ll train you too if necessary!

like

Will DM you. Thanks!

Yes. And I hate it lol

So a boutique firm focusing more on the ERISA/employee benefits rather than the tax baby Exec comp and equity side? Have any firms in mind I should consider?

Should I take Kroll TAS or stay in big 4 audit for one more year and then apply for big 4 FDD (currently have 1 YOE in audit)? My end goal is to switch to IB.

My concern is I don’t see too many people switch from Kroll TAS to IB on Linkedin (lots of Kroll valuation though). I don’t s see too many people move from Kroll TAS to big 4 TAS either.

I heard it is frowned upon to exit into industry without if you weren’t promoted to Senior analyst / consultant. Is this true?
