I know a controller with no certs who makes $250k (non-public company). He Left public accounting after 5 years for about $90k. Bounced every year or two for higher positions. 6 years later pulling a quarter mill. CPA is good and increases your chances of landing a decent job. However, I know tons of people without it in industry who make 6 figures salaries.

Yeah, I left with no cert

If you've made senior-level, even without cert, consider that you don't need to take a pay cut. That's exactly rly what I thought when I was searching, and even recruiters (who hope to low ball you so they can get a deal faster) said I don't need to take a pay cut. I was a 2nd year senior just before busy season when I left, no CPA, mostly private experience. Even without cert, Big 4 especially at senior level means something to companies.

like

Nope. Within industry, CPA and many other certs are really just for show/notoriety, especially if you get in earlier to gain the experience. Now I will say, I'm at a mid-tier company. Smaller and mid tier companies don't care as much as maybe a fortune 500 might. But even so, experience in the right areas is more valuable than passing exams. Certs are a sign of dedication/buckling down, not necessarily abilities. I was hired for my experience working under pressure and overseeing teams as well as my interest/passion in the area they were looking for. I interviewed for Walgreens internal audit and even they said they don't care about CPA and suggested I go for a CIA after getting the work experience required for it.

CPA is just for show. Many companies do want to see it though. I didn’t receive any extra money after receiving my CPA... but when I got my CISA, I got a promotion and 25K raise. Go figure... lol

In tax cpa is to be able to talk to IRS and state DOR via PoA, but I've always thought like you where it was just for show

Also I came from industry and my current network is mostly industry folks so curious how much of a culture adjustment it may be.
