Hi experts - could use advice on contributing to 401K. What’s the benefit of tax deferred investment if you plan on holding long term? My thought process is this: I’m earning 100K gross and by retirement years, I want to be able to withdraw at 200K level income. Wouldn’t that put me in a higher tax bracket than I am currently? So aside from reaping the benefits of the 401K match my company provides, what’s the benefit of contributing more? Seems like I will just be paying higher taxes later.

What is partner compensation like, as a function of the publicly released “profits per partner” data? I assume it varies based on the profitability of one’s practice—but how much does it vary?

I'm a stub year who recently totalled my vehicle and only had liability insurance. Managing partner says they understand if I have to work remotely until I can save up, but I'm terrified by the recent layoffs and was told it's important for jrs to maximize face time. Is it worth it to keep paying for ubers to come in (pretty pricey, plus no public transit options), or can I trust that this is an understandable excuse to reduce face time for a month or so? FWIW, the team comes in twice a week.

Senior associate here. Some of my favorite junior associates (very good work product!) are way off target and would need +200h for the rest of the year to hit bonus. Before handing them late night/weekend work, I ask them whether they want it or whether they prefer to coast for the rest of the year (I’ll hand it to someone else). Am I wrong?

Has a doctor ever suggested that you consider a less stressful job? And if so, are you male or female? I am female and have some chronic conditions. Today at a routine check-up with a new physician, he suggested maybe because of my "medical conditions" I think about a less stressful job. I have never received that advice from the specialists I see for those conditions, and I find it unlikely that a doctor would suggest this to a male patient. Does anyone have any insight?

How do you guys avoid coming off as condescending when giving feedback? I’m only a second year but I am effectively in charge of a couple smaller cases. I have a new first year working on first drafts for me who I’m trying to teach what little I know. MOFO bonuses WTF? Extra bonus at 2500 (30% more), 2700 (40% more), 2900 (55% more). Are there that many people billing that much that they had to create tiers? And are the tiers insulting?

I suck at this job. I make mistakes all the time and partners get on me about them. It’s not because I try to make mistakes but they just happen, far more frequently than I’d like. I’m a third year so I have no clue how I lasted this long to be honest. My anxiety levels are on a 10 because I’m so used to being an overachiever but my suckiness is standing out big time.
