I despise that word with my entire being.
This is where Derek gives the game away. Our agencies spend tons of money on D&I initiatives telling us how vital racial diversity is because we need “diverse perspectives” which is a synonym for diversity of thought. But of course that is a lie, because skin color contributes exactly nothing to 95% of the briefs out there, and no one seems to mind that the industry is made up almost entirely of coastal bubble dwellers living in NYC, SF and LA or pretending that they do. Most of the industry has the same political views, consumes the same media, chases the same scenes and are equally baffled and appalled that Trump won- the only difference being that the white folks are even more “woke” then the black folks, as polling data consistently demonstrates. The industry is basically AOC’s twitter followers at work. The whole D&I industry, and it is an industry, is driven by white people competing to out virtue signal each other, and the D&I service providers selling them absolution in the form of whatever exorbitantly priced program is trendy that month. Meanwhile the reality, as most recruiters will tell you if you get them drunk enough and IPEDS data confirms, is that there just aren’t very many candidates out there because advertising is not a career path that many POCS pursue. As further evidence, look at the demographics of those graduating with a marketing major. But of course, this doesn’t help sell unconscious bias training so you can’t mention it.
I get the comment that D&I is an industry, but saying that there aren’t many candidates? I don’t completely believe that, I do believe that POC are hopeful to enter the industry but cannot, because of nepotism, financial means or the agency doesn’t want to take a chance or develop them. When they do get into the industry, it’s increasingly frustrating to navigate office petty, politics, ignorant behavior, or just straight up racism. So where do the Black people go? To marketing companies where there is a little more support, to freelance, or a whole career change. @SVP1 question, and I don’t mean to sound rude. Are you saying that D&I is basically a shallow marketing scheme?
^ Sooo what are you saying (or proposing, if anything)?
