Consider a stand up desk; Much better for the back, not to mention blood flow

I have a height adjustable desk in my home office, and it was worth every cent. I can stand, I can sit - I even have an app on my iPhone that has saved my favorite height settings!

Hi there, With the other side of me, I am a therapist who specialises in back pain and chronic pain. I got into it way back in 2005 trying to get my own back pain under control so it has become a bit of a obsession of mine getting to understand it (inc returning to university and research). Regarding your question on a chair, what I found is it didn't really matter once I could get myself comfortable. This allows the back muscles to relax. I spent years trying all sorts of ergonomic chairs, foot rest etc but being 5ft and a bit (very important, 153cms), none of them fitted me well. What I did to find the perfect mattress, every time I stayed somewhere and had a better night's sleep than at home, I checked the mattress and every time it was a king koil so I bought one and love it. Everyone loved the good orthopedic mattress on my guest bed and it killed me. What I suggest is trying different styles of chair and find what works for you before investing. Is there an office rental option near you? You must straighten up and move regularly too. Relieving back pain is very individual and you really need to tune in to what works for you. What is typical with back pain: * Hip flexors tighten which is exacerbated by sitting * Same with hamstrings so now I sit with my legs on a shelf so my leg is partially straightened (that works for me, maybe not you). * Core can switch off and mobilser muscles like your quadratus lumborum (QLs) are doing all the work and they tighten and ache when you are standing for a while because this isn't their job to stabilise you but have to because your core isn't. * Getting up from seated, people usually lead with the head/shoulders which pushes into the lower back. Imagine each time you stand, you are pushing the floor away from you so you are using your leg muscles more to lift yourself, not your back muscles and momentum. I could keep going..... I did mention it has become a bit of an obsession 🤭 The therapies I use which are brilliant for back pain are the Bowen technique and less known Emmett technique. Somatics is a form of release and stretching that I also recommend. Pilates only at 1-1 because if your core is not firing and very weak, you will aggravate it easily. Epsom salts warm (not hot) baths are very good for the muscles as is a magnesium supplement. This is my first post here, just joined. Not sure if you can get in touch directly if you have any further questions but I am happy to help any way I can.

Hi K, this is such great advice and thank you for sharing your experience. I’m definitely going to start looking into the exercises you mentioned. I lift weights and run, but definitely have not been focusing on my core like I’m supposed to. Thanks again and I will definitely reach out with any questions. I appreciate the offer.

I've never had disc problems, but as an aging athlete who has dealt with a lot of injuries, there is no magic bullet to joint and muscle pain. It takes a village... get a new mattress that helps keep your spine straight when you sleep, get some PT at a therapy spot and then have them give you home exercises - core, hips, legs: strengthening, mobility, stretching, etc. that you can do a few days a week. also proactively work on your posture when sitting and walking. finally, get a good office chair and get up and stretch a few times a day. also consider a standing desk setup for a couple hours a day.

pay the $ and get the Herman Miller. definitely worth it. had one 10+ years now and cant imagine WFH without it

Yes, and unfortunately I am getting back surgery, but I hope yours is fixed before it gets to that point. Try PT, and keep up with the exercises I believe more than a chair

I went WFH full time 5 years ago, the cheapie office chair wasn’t cutting it. Went to a local used office furniture place and they had about 25 chairs to sit in and select from. Some of them were brand new with tags on them. Key is to find something that fits your body- not just a brand name. Any of the top names that are certified for 8+ hours will work- just need to look for features and comfort.

Herman Miller Embody. Don't have severe back pain but I have the chair and it's great.

Stressless Magic Office Chair!

Thanks D1, I will definitely try to hunt one down.

I WFH... sit on a yoga ball. And I have a trapeze swing in my doorway to invert whenever I get the need.

I would also (as a fellow sufferer of ruptured disks) recommend physical therapy that includes core strengthening exercises, traction, and inversion. Suffered 2 ruptured disks 7 years ago. Could not stand up straight. Physical therapy made a huge difference. Also recommend Gralise, which is extended release gabapentin, for pain if you need help. Way better than opioids. 7 years later, I work out 5 days per week and have no pain.

First glad to know I'm not the only one with back issues (had 360 spinal fusion T12 to L5 7 years ago). I'm off to order a new office chair thanks to you all! Great recommendations. Thank you!!

Thanks for all of the great replies guys. I’ll definitely be looking at all of these options. Definitely going to look into the standing desk. Even with my current desk, I’ll get up for a few minutes while working and can instantly feel relief. I thought my budget for a new chair was pretty high (was thinking I’d go as high as 2K all in for a chair that would provide relief), but that Magic Office Chair blew me away. 3K!? Wow. I can’t get myself to do that one yet. I’ll look into the warranty though. If it’s a solid warranty I may invest in that. Cost is as much as my tempur-pedic lol

I’ve had back pain, either in lower back or sciatic nerve for the past 8 months. I got released from physical therapy around the holidays because I was making improvements and wasn’t in pain. However, since returning to work and working busy season hours it’s difficult to stay seated for most of the day. I bought a standing desk, but was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? I need to make some serious changes as I’m 27 and should not have this much back pain so young 😢

At what age were your kids able to sleep alone in an unfamiliar place (e.g., room in vacation home)? Last time we traveled with our two and three year olds we found my husband needed to share the room with them and then they were happy and slept… but it meant he had to go to bed at like 8/830 pm which kind of sucks. They are now 4 and 2.5… should they be able to go to sleep in the room together without him there? Are they old enough to understand and cooperate?
