Any firms where true billables are 1950 or less?

I have worked at 2 where the true billables are 1800. They do exist

like

The problem with 1950 is that my firm would genuinely be fine if that’s where I was, but I’m not really allowed to turn down work. And I’m given enough work to hit 2400. It does make it reasonably easy to take a vacation though.

like

Yep. Biglaw “expectation” is 1850 and bonus eligible at 1950 (although I got a small bonus last year even with my covid hours which were embarrassingly below even 1850), and now at a boutique firm where 1850 is expected and bonus starts there.

like

My firm has 1850 minimum for a full bonus. We’re also expected to do pro Bono in addition to the 1850.

like

Mind sharing at least one of the firms?

They are both smaller, boutique firms. That's where I've found more reasonable hours.

My firm is 1900, but were midsized. That’s the tradeoff. I find it very comfortable here, yet you still have the opportunity to exceed that 1900 for your own career development.

Currently at a job where I just don’t like people or the work all that much. Fewer clients possibilities (we’re basically an in-house team) than our sister office plus I have no desire for a promotion. Sister office is much more of an actual agency plus the culture is way more up lifting- I can vouch personally. I would love to transfer to the other office or just look for new opportunities. How do I bring up wanting an internal transfer without making it sound like I will leave otherwise?

I have been in my position for 27 years and have never seen such a state of affairs as I have this year (but then, with the pandemic, who has, right?) Well, long story short, we've gone hybrid (some in person, some online). The teacher has been out with surgeries and covid. I have been teaching both groups at the same time. Have FDD salaries shifted up in a similar way as audit? Just as a reference point, at EY the new S1’s in San Francisco are making between $92-98k. I’ve always heard FDD is at least 20% higher than audit. So are S1’s in SF now making 110-120k?

I’m a first year associate at a Big Law firm. Most of my assignments have been research memos and summary emails. I enjoy research but the questions asked are never obvious and the answer is usually nuanced, unclear, or the perfect case just doesn’t exist. As a result, it usually takes me a while to craft an answer that I feel confident in. However, more and more often I’ve been given very short deadlines to turn over the research, as short as 3-4 hours for a complicated question. Is this common

Was first put on notice when DFJ was issued.

Does the “salary should equal 1/3 of your collected billables” apply at a midsized firm that is strictly litigation? Mostly all insurance defense work. How about for a 3rd year associate?

A bit freaked out by my “generalist” approach to litigation so far. Almost two years in and couldn’t really say I’m that “good” in any one area.

Don’t really have my own clients, and I feel like in order for me to gain the confidence necessary to obtain them, I need to specialize in SOMETHING.

Million dollar question - any areas of litigation seen as being a good specialty to get into now/for the future?

What is a reasonable amount to accept to settle a case with undisputed liability? Let’s say for example potential damages are realistically $100k-1M. Let’s say cost of defense is $200k. No chance of them getting out on SJ or a MTD. Is cost of defense a reasonable starting point? It seems like an offer below that would not be serious.

How do you get out of a funk? For the last couple of weeks I’ve not really cared about work. I’m a 2nd year doing insurance defense, mostly PI. My hours are low and I don’t care. I couldn’t care less about doing more doc review. My current cases and clients seriously suck (clients don’t care why should I). I swear I get the worst assignments. All that and more, but I know I need to get over myself and get into a new rhythm/routine. Is this regular and what do you do to get out of it?

I am a mid-level associate in litigation. In law school, I focused on appellate litigation and did exclusively moot court and appellate focused classes (successfully, won several awards if it matters). I am now doing a lot more trial at work than I expected and am feeling out of my element and not as skilled as I would like. Obviously I should have done trial practice/mock trial in law school, but it being too late for that now, any recommendations on what I can do to improve as a trial lawyer?
