Any fish out there willing to share some background check horror stories? I’m waiting on mine to clear before submitting my resignation but can’t think of anything that could pop up to warrant not submitting sooner and taking some time off

They somehow confused me with a gentleman of Middle Eastern descent, with an extremely ethnic-sounding name (think Mustafa Qureshi), born 1 town away from mine with the same 4 last digits of SSN. I am a gentleman of western European descent with an equally ethnic-sounding name (think Connor MacGregor). Application got put on hold and had to go through advanced screening. This was at a Fortune 50 company. I would up not working there because another offer came through in the months it took them to clear me. As an added bonus, the background check company for some reason sent me the full name, address, etc. for the completely unrelated person they confused me with.

I have the same question. When do you let the background check contact your current employer? After you have put in your resignation? But won't one want to clear the background check before resigning?

like

Good question

Just got an update that it should come back tomorrow so now seems like it’ll be a moot point but I’ve always tended to think you should definitely wait for the background check to clear before resigning. Don’t want to be the left without a job should an unexpected surprise come along.

And how does HireRight get any info?

Chuck the whole thing in a 500F oven for like 18-22 min.
