Many who repatriate are lured by a vibrant startup scene in India that is drawing unprecedented capital from venture and private equity firms and is buoyed by an effervescent market for stocks. But they are also disenchanted with what they perceive as America’s bleak and hopeless immigration landscape, where the wait times for green cards are tortuously long, and the limits on launching startups for newcomers are highly restrictive.

Set up a 1:1 video meeting. Ask what’s up in their life, if everything is ok. Once you confirm nobody died, bring up the feedback. Say that your direction is not optional, and that in order to best work together, direction has to be followed. If they push back or get defensive, politely end the convo then tell the ECD what’s up, and maybe lightly ask for a suggestion on how to proceed, just to cover your ass. Because you’ll get blamed for the bad work, not the AD.
Yes ^
Very happy to supplement or replace any under performing AD talent. 🙋♂️
Sounds like your art director is, in fact, a designer. I have found that many of these people are not used to partnering with copywriters and dismiss much of what they have to say. To their own detriment.
“Just send me the copy and I’ll slot it in.”
SMH.
Sounds like youre within your rights to just change the work to something you like (so you have something to turn in), and just let the ECD know youre having trouble with the guy/gal. If you’re not the confrontational type that is.
Youre both freelance after all, and need to make a good impression as a solver of problems not a causer of problems.

UPDATE: After a long talk with the boss, where I showed how the AD wasn't taking direction, the boss assures me that this is my campaign and he wants me running it. He then has the AD do some more layouts, which were just abysmal. I picked 4 layouts I thought could be turned into something, with suggestions. AGAIN the AD responds with "no thanks, I like them the way they are." I call in a favor from an AD buddy who puts together three pretty sweet layouts over the weekend, and I send them to the boss. The boss asks me to provide photo mood board and 10 additional lines, so I send over two photo mood boards, plus two dozen lines. Today I get fired because the boss says he feels like I'm just not enthusiastic enough about the campaign. I think it's because I already gave him everything he needs to have his low-rate AD finish the campaign without having to pay me the rest of our contract. What should I have done?
That’s sucks, sorry CD :/ that was a ruthless move. Makes us realize the work is less important than the bottom line.
Ask the Project Manager if there’s anyone else you can work with. Ask the ECD what they think of this AD and if they’ve worked with them before. Suggest other freelancers you think could be good for the agency to try. Raise the issue without actually having to be the asshole.
This Creative sounds either lazy, not very good or manipulative. Which would be a little more understandable if they were full time. So frustrating that there are many great people out of work and others serving up this attitude.
Lol! Seems like your AD is calling the”Who gives a f*ck” committee. If you need an AD to jump in and help you out efficiently with constant communication please reach out. My name is Tammy. I have 10+ years in Ad industry as an ACD - AD. Tammymagnatta.com
