I have 2 kids and my busy season was 8-6 then home with the kids til 8/830 and then back online. I don't think you need a formal program to make it work. Demonstrate you can get it done without being there. If you need 1 night a week working late then call in the grand parents or daycare. This approach is common in my office amongst all levels and you will set an example so people don't feel they can't do this job when they have kids.

like

It's possible. My husband is a partner and I'm a MD and we have 2 little ones. Involves working a lot of late nights after the kids are asleep. But totally do-able! Good luck! :-)

I will warn you that working from home with a baby/small child is difficult. Maybe you'll have an easy baby who will just nap between feedings, but mine had to be held constantly. Slings and wraps were not an option either. But, there are ways you can get creative. Can you each do a compressed 4-day workweek? And then do 1-2 grandparent days and the rest in daycare?

like

Also for legal purposes, the firm can't give you special treatment that wouldn't be afforded employees without children. Unless there's a clear firm initiative, they would have a hard time letting you work from home more than other team members.

like

Otherwise they could be sued for discriminating against those without children (I.e., if those with children were allowed to work from home in a disproportionate manner than those without). Although if you could each do 1 day at home and then use the grandparents for 1 day each (assuming both sets live in same city), that would leave you with only 1 day of daycare a week. Would that be doable from a $$$ standpoint?

like

What is your firm policy? I know Crowe says you cannot work from home and care for family members at the same time. You need to make a judgment call on that. Also how much you need to be in the office depends on your job. We have a few people in our office who are completely remote and never come into the office. I pay for aftercare for my son and he goes to camps in the summer. There is no other way if both you plan on being full time.

It's considered a regional firm but only located in WI as of right now but yes it's smaller than a big 4

like

I do daycare. I do not flex. When there is a crisis I rely on backup care from the firm.

like

afford for me to go down to flex time and get paid less when we have kids but want to somehow figure out a way to handle busy seasons with having a kid. Daycare could be an answer or working from home a lot but we want to avoid babysitting from our parents on a daily basis

I think daycare would have to be the solution. Obviously working from home the majority of busy season won't be conducive to business needs. The client needs face time, the team needs to be together and getting approval to work from home the majority of the time isn't realistic. You might be able to swing 1 day work from home each week during busy season, so when combined with husband that's 2 days, leaving daycare for only 3 days.

Well my office does let people work from home during non client hours so anywhere before 8 and after 5. I was thinking full days during busy season and probably would have to just make up the time during the week at home. I don't go to clients a lot because I do mostly tax work during busy season and I'm not on any audits.

I have a meeting with my coach and will try to discuss options with her or see if she knows of any options about the firm that I haven't heard of

^Are you at a smaller firm? Might be more flexibility offered at local/regional shops than the National firms where everything is cookie cutter.

There's a lot of backstory to this but I can only type so much SO I've been with my company for 10.5 hours and just found out they've increased their base pay for starting employees $3-5/hr. I have received my annual 3-4% raises, only because I always make sure to ask for it, but nothing more. They didn't even acknowledge my 10 year anniversary with the company and it's a pretty small company (less than 100 employees). I feel I should get a $3-5/hr raise since the base pay was raised. Thoughts?

I left KPMG after 7 years after being passed over for Director promotion. I left to start a medical business. 3 months in, my partner and I grossed $130K in sales w/ a 60% margin. 3rd year corporate at V10 in major market. Thoughts on getting ahead of the “being asked to leave” conversation expected early in fourth year? Does it make sense to try to jump ship beforehand (presumably to a similar firm)? Have been extremely slow this year, especially since COVID (50-hour April) and expect I’m not earning my keep. No layoffs yet but obviously I need to be profitable for the firm.
