I start my classes with “circles” based on personal, social emotional prompts. Today we were discussing the impact of technology in our lives (especially during these times). I had students look at the recent texts they sent out and the ones they received and have them identify the emotions conveyed in those messages (anger, appreciation). It turned out into a fun, yet reflective activity that gave them pause on their activity online. We had a few good laughs for sure!
You sound amazing. Wish my kid was in your school :-)

Talent show! Genius Hour projects! Virtual breakout rooms!
Thanks so much.
“Guess who” with baby pictures
Cool idea.
Virtual scavenger hunts or go noodle. My kids go nuts scavenger hunts.
Mine too! However, I can only do them when the whole class is remote. I teach in a hybrid model- in person until lunchtime then remote in afternoon. Some of my kids go to an after school program so they can’t participate- but I like the idea of virtual scavenger hunts- where do you find them?
Connect four on Jamboard
Oh wow. Yes! Thank you!
We just had Fun Friday. We did team charades - we used breakout rooms to let the teams prepare then present to whole class, then we did a Jeopardy virtual game. We have done BINGO with virtual bingo cards, Twenty questions and a close up photography guessing game we call Zoom. The two favorites by far were Tomato Ketchup when one student turns around so they can’t see and teacher holds up name if chosen student to say Tomato Ketchup and other student has to guess who said it. They also like Mute-ify, you pick a category like fruit. The chosen student mutes their mike and says the name of a fruit and they other kids have to guess what fruit was said.
Thanks, Massachusetts. Those are great. You inspired me - I’ll call the game Read My Lips based on the mute-ify idea.
I just learned about Gimkit. It’s like if Kahoot and Quizlet had a baby. My students love it!!
Looking it up now. Thank you
Virtual field trips
Guided cooking class. Send ingredient and material list a few days or week ahead of time.
Dance Party!
Have you ever used jib jab? It makes amazingly funny videos using faces of your students. It cost $12 a year. And it takes about an hour to make all of their faces but then you have a years worth of entertainment. They have hundreds and hundreds of fun videos for every holiday and celebration and just random music videos.
Sounds worth it. I have seen the videos but didn’t think of subscribing. Thanks!
Do a virtual show and tell. Have theme days for the kids to show off something meaningful or fun. Also, you can still do dress up days (pajama, class color, sports day; etc.). A content relevant scavenger hunt might be fun.
We actually did a virtual show and tell today. Students put their items into a bag and had to give descriptive clues. A theme sounds interesting. Thanks.
virtual art show
Kahoot has a huge selection of activities and students love to compete. I create comprehension assessments and they enjoy taking them on Kahoot.
We play charades and jeopardy and do fun science experiments. I’m planning to do an exercise where the kids watercolor their breathing if they are mad, sad, anxious, happy, etc.
You could have them use a jamboard to color on as well so you don’t need to send supplies
Name that tune is fun for all ages. See if they can guess it after 3 seconds, then 5 seconds, and 10 seconds. Can put them into teams or indvidually they can keep score. IF they guess after 3 seconds then award 5points, guess after 5 seconds-award 3 points, guess after 10 seconds 1 point.
You could do a scavenger hunt. The students could find items based on phonics like /sp/ spoon or something that begins with the letter r... remote. It could be colors or anything. I have done it and my study loved it!
My students loved it! Sorry for the typo!
