Set up a purchase system. Begin each day with an assigned amount of money then have students purchase going to specials, sitting with friends, etc. Throughout the day stop and count money. If a student has 5 pennies get them to tell what you can trade for and have them trade the money. It makes the money more relevant.
Why don’t you buy a set of plastic coins and give students each a set? To best understand coins, they need to have a good basic understanding of numbers and multiples of 1, 5, 10, and 25.
What have you tried so far?
I used touch points for coins and counting a group of change when I taught first grade. It was hard for them to switch between counting by 5, 10, 25 so I taught them to use touch points so they only needed to count by 5. A nickel you touch in the middle as you count, a dime you touch top and bottom, a quarter you touch 5x. I found songs about coins helped them remember them as well.
just make it as real life as possible. have them simulate buying things at the store, buying prizes, etc. i love the suggestions above ^
