Peninsula State Park, Potawatomi State Park, Cave Point County Park are all good places. Wild Tomato Wood-Fired Pizza is a must try in the region!
+1 on wild tomato! Also try Hatch Distilling Co
Traverse City, MI is fun. I went there for a bachelor party a few years ago and did a “Kayak, Bike, and Brew” brewery tour. The downtown area is fun with lots of shops and restaurants. I believe there is an outdoor area with lots of food trucks and live music. I’d like to go back with my family as well - it was a pretty family-friendly place.
New Buffalo, MI is also fun (and closer to Chicago).

I'm not a huge fan, but people rave about the "fish boil"
Following! Planning on a similar trip in April.
+1 Traverse City
Charlevoix, Michigan is beautiful. Stayed at Inn at Bay Harbor last summer with Marriott points and really enjoyed it. Great area for golf, hiking, and drinking
If you’re willing to drive a little further, consider going south to mammoth caves and the surrounding areas. Then hit up Nashville and drive back. It’s about 6 hours to mamouth caves, stop a night in louisville for great food.
Or if you want add on 1.5 hr to Nashville, then a 7 hr drive back to chicago.
I love Michigan and wisconsin but the early spring is a sort of sad time to go north. You’ll get better weather, flowers blooming, and great food in ky/tn
