Honestly, as a person who has undergone sleep apnea and depression (makes sleeping "on demand" a surprisingly difficult activity) what helped me most wasn't any pill or anything. A lot of my issue with falling asleep was that I could NOT turn my brain off at all, so my mind would be racing and not letting me sleep.

Melatonin, at least for me, gave me a heavier sleep with less waking up but didn't actually help me fall asleep. It also gave me excruciatingly vivid nightmares at times but idk if that was a just me thing. I also used to drink and smoke heavily, which had the exact opposite effect. I could fall asleep quickly, but I didn't sleep particularly well. Admittedly I combined the two often with some success, but that isn't a long term nor suggested fix.

I found meditation to be something I just couldn't do. I couldn't focus my mind on anything other than the stress of the day, or the worry of tomorrow, or something not related at all to the breathing I was supposed to be focused on which all of a sudden became rather close to hyperventilating. Then I got frustrated I couldn't do it and yeah, didn't work for me. Maybe for others, not for me.

What helped the most was I started working out like an absolute animal. Like two hours before bed I would work out as hard for about a half an hour. If I had access to gym equipment, great, if not, I'd do push ups, squats, wall sits, crunches, mountain climbers, everything and anything to just absolutely exhaust myself. By the time I got showered and into bed I was really tired, I slept like the dead, and I got healthier too. (I also started playing sounds from an app(s) called Sleep Sounds and Sleepo before bed). I lost like 50 ish pounds in a few months doing that. It also made me want to eat better, make better choices, etc. When you eat good you feel good. Maybe that extends to sleep as well, I honestly don't know. Try and be healthier in other areas of your life and it will carry over I think.

Good luck! (side note, I'm awake now because I decided that coffee to stay awake while driving was a good idea, it wasn't)

Tldr; pick things up, put them down. Eat more green things. Listen to nature. Don't combine alcoholism and sleeping pills. Meditating frustrated me. Sleep tight. No sheep.

Meditation. Related things: breathing exercises, stretching, simple thought exercises (i.e. listening to late baroque, string quartets and separating polyphonic phrases into 1st/2nd violin. Counting sheep. Etc), heart rate manipulation (spreading your breathing across x beats and counting fewer beats as your heart rate slows).

I get some OTC sleeping pill (doxylamine), grind it into a powder with the butt of a knife, suspend it in 1 ml of water, load it into a needleless syringe, and shoot it up my butt.

Knocks me out in 15 minutes and greatly reduced sleeping pill hangover the next day

I second meditation and melatonin.

Also consult a doctor with some specialization in sleep. Often not staying asleep can be a physical issue, for instance with breathing.

Similarly, trouble falling asleep is something you may want to discuss with a therapist. I had onset insomnia for a while that was a manifestation of my depression.

Finally, I find listening to the BBC shipping forecast really helpful when I'm having trouble settling down enough to sleep.

Read a book the last 30min before going to bed. It not only conditions your mind to unwind, but it also unplugs you from all the triggers not letting you sleep (e-mails, social media, etc.)

I had issues with insomnia and recently started the Audible trial and with the sleep timer, it automatically turns off after some time. It’s been a great way to get back into reading and fall asleep easily

I have a nighttime ritual. There is an order to everything and that helps me sleep. If I do it out of order I can’t sleep.
