Any horror stories from going in-house to an early stage tech company? Would be leaving as a mid level from a V5. Excited at the opportunity and possibility of building something but terrified of leaving the comfort, going into the unknown and having regrets (devil you know > devil you don’t).

Yeah mine went out of business 4 months later. Well actually they stopped paying and asked you to continue working till they could raise more capital.

All the founders had success with start ups and I was misled about the capitalization of the firm. I had specifically asked, was basically lied to.

Yes. It has already been discussed on this forum - layoffs.

Oh I feel like I could do a whole write up on this. But the first signs are usually always cost cuts or even something bigger or public like a hiring freeze. That’s how it will start. Because there is always a multi stage plan to address the issues. I’m actually unfortunately seeing this right now at my employer and it’s interesting how some people react saying the company is still in great shape. I think people really want to believe it because it’s worrying otherwise. There are also people leaving and some in high level positions. Management always minimizes and will usually say that nothing will go beyond whatever cost measures have been affected whether it’s certain areas/geographies, kinds of workers, or new offers rescinded. As the measures get bigger it will be more public so by then even a search will bring up something. Or there will be rumors if you’re paying attention but could depend on the size of the company. They will definitely try to keep things quiet for as long as they can though.

You could always have a Theranos or Bolt like problem. Lack of resources (generally all start-ups face this). Growth > compliance mentality (a certain ride hailing company comes to mind).

I joined a tech startup when the company had about 45 days of cash and the legal function was basically a dumpster fire. The first six months were hell, but I and a few other G&A types were collectively able to right the ship.

The silver lining to joining a startup is that the experience can be amazing for your resume. It’s like I’m a completely different lawyer compared to when I joined.

However, it could have all gone south in that first 6-12 months. While I feel like my colleagues and I did a fine job, external forces (e.g., market conditions) helped more than they hurt. It’s going to come down to your risk tolerance, especially in this market.

I’d say a lot of in house teams are very small. Your colleagues can have a racial bias against you, and you’re stuck with one or two racist people as your whole team.

How early stage? What's their runway? How big is the legal team? Do you have decent budget to outsource legal areas outside your area of expertise? What is the plan for scaling legal? Any big risks to the business model (eg are they crypto or adtech?) Do you trust the founders?

Please, I need your opinion on this. I have 6 years of experience as a software developer and just finished my masters degree in data science. Now I am looking for a job here in the US. I went through the hiring process with this company and finally got an offer. They offered 88k/year and I responded opening a negotiation. They emailed me back saying that I am no longer in this process anymore with no further explanation and in Thanksgiving day. Is that normal?that email really got me very upset

I have 25k in cash savings, contribute 6% of my income to a 401k to get 3% match, and make roughly 90k a year. Should I pay off my loans right away or pay off over a 2-3 year period? I figure with there interest rate being in the 7% range it’s dumb not to pay them off as it would be hard to achieve a 7% return in the market right now (again I could be wrong with that as well)?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

For the past year I have applied to in-house positions without so much as an interview. I review the job descriptions to make sure my skills are transferable, tailor my resume to the required skills and when possible, provide a cover letter indicating why I want to move in-house. For context I have about five years of insurance coverage experience. Is there something is am missing? Any advice from folks who have managed to make the move?

I have one pro bono case that I kept when I left my firm to go in house. It’s a matter completely unrelated to my company and I have malpractice insurance through the nonprofit organization associated with the case. I’ve made clear to my client that I’m repping this client in my personal capacity. No one has asked me specifically about pro bono stuff at my company - if I know there’s no conflict of interest, is this something I should disclose? To whom should I disclose this?

In-house counsel - would you prefer working at a big company specializing in a field of law, eg, privacy, IP, employment, etc, or a small company being a general counsel? Assume the small company has a higher risk of going under compared to the big company, but higher reward (via stock), and the large company pays a healthier salary.

I just received an offer for a job I am very excited about. Base is within reasonable range and I will likely go back and ask for a bit more there. The company also offers a yearly cash bonus based on the performance of the company as well as a stock grant. Those are determined based on percentages of base salary. My question is: are those percentages typically negotiated or set based on position?

Been in house for about a year. I just found out that a new hire who has 1-2 less years of experience than me (but will have the same role/title as me) received a compensation package significantly higher than me, mostly due to the market dynamics with law firm associates’ compensation being ratcheted up the past year. Can I ask for an equitable raise mid year? And if so, how? I got rave reviews but an immaterial pay bump (3%) at year end in December.
