Any ideas/suggestions on how to go about forming a diversity committee at a mid size regional law firm? I expect it would be met with some amount of resistance. Thanks!

Sounds like you need to just pack it up and head to a firm that will at least act like they care about diversity. Not having a diversity committee says alot about the firm, and none of it is good.

Talk to partners with sway at your firm and get them to support it.

Depending on what kind of critical mass you have, see whether there is a partner that will advocate for this with you (consider a white male ally you trust if you don't have a lot of "diverse" partners), or potentially expand diversity to get more buy in (just ethnic and racial minorities or women and LGBT too? What about employees with disabilities, white and non-white immigrants, first generation professionals?). It's not perfect, but if what you're trying to accomplish will ultimately benefit many others, it may be helpful to bring those folks into the fold now so you have a stronger coalition instead of, say, a minorities club of a half a dozen people. It might be easier to start on an informal level with a session to meet eachother, create internal network, and then discuss what you want and how you can help one another and push the institution for change. Hosting and connecting with gc can be impactful in presenting the business case to firm leadership. Pushback will depend on what demands you ultimately have (requests for funding events or conference attendance, changing hiring/staffing policies, anti bias traning or hiring a diversity/ professional development staff member, etc)

like

All of this. Strength in numbers is key. Make sure you build a coalition before you ask for what you want - the powers-that-be need to see that you are organized and serious. At the same time, start identifying a partner at the firm that is an ally that will be your champion. More than 1 if possible. Cohesive and direct - good luck to you!

Why does everyone preach DEI but fail to recognize that people also grow up in different backgrounds and socioeconomic classes? Increasing diversity in these elite firms also means that you will be at team dinners with people who didn’t grow up with well off parents and experiences living in the finer things in life or enjoying the same things outside of work - but not all teams are cognizant of that in their social conversations and can unintentionally make those ppl feel different. End rant.
