Just accepted an opportunity as a district manager for an Insurance company. Not 100% sure about Commission-based only. I'm a senior associate at an AmLaw 100 firm being considered for an non-equity partner position at another AmLaw 100 firm which is a bit further down the pole. There is a business development expection to eventually convert to equity; the expectation at the start is to assist with existing work. Jumping essentially let's me short track the road to partner. I'm unsure about the opportunity, which is essentially me starting over. Any wisdom on this situation? Thanks!

If you had a choice between Jones Day and Schulte, which would/should you choose and why? It’s hard to look pass the ranking/prestige of Jones Day but they are black box whereas Schulte is lockstep and a funds specialist firm which could lead to GC roles at a fund quite easily in the long term. That’s not the long term play here, but just stating a fact to consider. Also keep in mind I would be lateraling in from out of state.

Has anybody successfully leveraged a job offer into better conditions at the incumbent firm? I.e. office transfers or better case opportunities - not compensation. Or do people get offers and take them as a matter of course?

Giving notice next week to someone who went out of her way to recruit and hire me away from my old firm and has been really good to me. She worked for over a year to get me to come over. Now after only 6 months I’m going back to my old firm but in a different (better) group than I was in before. I am dreading the convo and feeling guilty but need to get over it. FWIW I’m 2012 and we are getting crushed with lack of senior people hence more guilt…. Just looking for a little encouragement :)

For context I was fired from my first big law job during Covid-April last year, due to performance issues and failure to meet billables. They’ve remained somewhat neutral on my employment affidavit by leaving the box regarding satisfactory performance blank and indicating it’s firm policy to only verify dates of employment. Am rather nervous! Thoughts? Has anyone gone through this? How?
