Most of the litigators over there that I’ve been adverse to seem like miserable pricks, but maybe things are different on the inside.

People who work there are some of the most terrible people I know.

I’m a QE associate. I took the job for some unique reasons fully expecting to hate it. I’ve been surprised to find that the people are great. Literally zero of the horror stories that I hear from other firms and only 1 partner that I even dislike a little bit. Some lawyers here are tough, sometimes borderline jerks, with opposing counsel. That’s not really my style, but in my experience being a hardass to OC does not translate to being unpleasant internally. On hours, you need to hit 2100 to get a bonus, which is higher than other firms. I’ve generally billed just a little above that and never felt pressure to bill more. If JBQ gets a list with my name on it most months, he’s been nice enough to keep it to himself. That said, there are definitely some insane billers here, not sure how the average compares to the rest of NYC biglaw. Biggest difference between QE and other firms as far as I can tell is just that QE is super decentralized. No one is finding you work or, crucially, making sure you’re not working too much. You have to be proactive both about finding cases (not hard, the firm is busy), and about saying no to new work. I’ve found that the people who can’t say no are the ones who really struggle. Overall, I like the decentralization and QE has mostly worked out for me. But I generally believe that biglaw is fairly fungible and you should go wherever feels right. Feel free to send more specific Qs.
