During my first year of teaching, I had a student who seriously struggled both behaviorally and academically. He refused to come to the resource room for services frequently and routinely told me how much he disliked me. It was a tough year. On the last day of school that year, I told him he didn’t have to come out to my room and could stay with his class to celebrate the last day. In the last 15 minutes of the last day, I walked into my room and saw him sitting there waiting for me. He never said “I like you now” or “I’m glad you’re here for me,” but I always kinda took that interaction that way.
As a high school teacher, I feel inspired and honored when students bring their college essays to me and say, “Thank you for making me work so hard!”
Oh, I’ll add this: put a desktop fountain on your desk or some artifact/toy. Students often come to my desk and play in the water, they start talking, I ask a few questions, and pretty soon we’re having a relaxed, deeper conversation. And they think the fountain is just a decoration 🤣
I had a student this year tell me that this is the first time he’s ever felt like his teacher really liked him. I teach sixth grade. Broke and melted my heart at the exact same time.
We did speed dating personality disorders yesterday. Some got into character. “I just don’t understand why no one wants to date me. I’m so perfect,” said the narcissist. 😂 I hear one student actually laugh. He *never* laughs. It made my day yesterday! I hope it boosts you a little. 😊
I had a coworker put their kid in my class. Student has struggled since my class is very rigorous, parent wanted to know WTF but this is what was basically said.
My kid is failing but says she loves your class and math is interesting and enjoyable for the first time since 4th grade. What are you doing that makes that possible?
Probably the nicest compliment I've ever gotten from a parent.
PS the kid is improving and will be fine.
Thanks, everyone! What we do is important.
