any international students who regret coming to the UK? I definitely do

Came here as an international student and got a grad job. Career wise, im disappointed with the pay and its progression. I didn’t realise that there would be such a big disparity in pay in comparison to our US counterparts.

Saw a fishbowl post where someone said that they’re offered $130k for a SC at D (that’s about £100k), which equivalent to what SMs are paid in the UK.

I came here as an international student and I honestly love it. Been in London for around 5.5 yrs, have a friend group from business school, all is fine.

My only thing is we as internationals are often obsessed with work (makes sense, did a lot to get here), so sometimes I miss the community feel that Brits have. They hang out more, they split costs and live together (think group of 3-4 friends renting a big house). I miss that, everyone lives alone and it's a bit lonely sometimes when all your friends work crazy hours all the time.

I've recently joined Accenture and so far WLB is good and there's a bunch of fun people in the teams so hoping to connect a bit more with local people too, as I like to hang out and want to have random barbecues on the weekends for example. My culture is very social so I miss that aspect of it. But work-wise it is much better than most of Europe I'd say. Working with modern technologies and concepts, London being so huge and full of opportunities, really being at the forefront of everything.

I noticed some compare it to US and then they're disappointed. In the US people work longer hours, have limited benefits, everything is expensive (e.g. Uni, healthcare) and their holiday leave is a joke. I have nothing against the country and who wants to pursue that go for it. I just want a good quality of life while also enjoying what I do mostly. I have a lot of hobbies and don't want to neglect them, my friends and family. I just want to be happy and I think for now at least London is a good place for that! ☺

These generalization about the US are ridiculous.

1. People in London often work long hours too

2. The benefits at top firms in the US are better than London. Benefits like free egg-freezing and spa allowances as part of wellness.

3. Everything is expensive where? You talk about the US as if individual cities and states don’t have wildly different policies.

4. Unlimited PTO is more common in US companies than British companies

Why? Sorry to hear that

Curious to hear why OP and where you originally came from.

I’ve been here since undergrad 8 years ago and loved it, but certainly getting a bit bored of it now.

I initially came here as an international student. I really love my life here. So many more opportunities to get involved in things im passionate about, so much explore and see, the arts scene is thriving. Why do u dislike it so?

Came as an international student then consultant. Left for the US for salary and progression, but would move back for the right role.

Internal transfer

Are you saying that from a career opportunity pov or lifestyle?

If you’re not happy then it might be the best option to leave leave and look elsewhere or ask for a transfer ?

Why so? Intrigued

Agreed ^

I can easily think why that could be the case, but would love to hear your reasons.

I'm coming in sept. Have unconditional offers for masters. Intrigued by OP's post

Wonder why too? I came 6 months before covid so it was not the best timing :( so I am blaming it on that. Hope will get better now #brexitdecisionsbtw

I moved at that time too! I was told it takes a year to 2 for London to feel like home, and I think that’s correct ☺️ I love it now, and for me it had a lot to do with building a good group of friends. I didn’t know anyone when I moved so that was very hard.

It’s definitely the harder path as an international student. Do you have a good support network here ? That can make or break the experience in my view.

Moved from US and have some regrets but work life balance is undoubtedly better here

Can anyone here familiar with FDM Group shed more light on their contracts and operations? All I know about them is that their pay is grossly under market value even as a junior developer in training. Also you are locked into a 2 year contract in which you have to pay them should you leave for a higher paying job for example.

Does this group also have a non-compete which prevents you from working a second job should you need more money?
