I left for industry. If you get the right job, it can be great. A lot of in house positions will separate planning and compliance departments so the JDs will be in pure planning roles. You will end up as advisors to the business and working closely with the business, legal, finance and accounting departments on various plans. I am so glad I left Big4. Just make sure when you interview that you ask a lot of questions about expectations for the role, daily responsibilities, reporting structures, etc. Ask whether Tax has a “seat at the table” in business decisions. You want to be in a place where the answer is a resounding yes - otherwise you will always be playing catch up and cleaning up messes that others create by not including Tax from the beginning. Tax policy work and tax controversy are also great roles for JDs so ask about that in interviews. You can help shape legislation and policy that impacts your company either directly or through trade groups. Tax controversy - writing all of the opinions and position papers to support the company on audit. Good meaty technical issues there! Lots to do in house for JDs - can be challenging and fun without all the Big4 BS.

Can you say a little more about if International Tax or National Tax are better for JD/LLM down the road? Also appreciate any insight on the planning vs tax controversy with respect to pay / lifestyle / demand in the market.

Well, I’ve done both National Tax and International Tax so I guess both help down the road. :) With National Tax, it does depend on what you are doing and how specialized you are. The more narrowly focused you are, the harder it is to parlay that into an industry job later. However, doing a rotation there gives you good experience and prestige. I heard in interviews more than once “I know you’ll be able to write well because you spent time in National Tax.” My time in the practice offices doing international tax really helped me the most in working with the business on a daily basis. I am still an advisor now, but with one client. My company is so big that we have separate teams for controversy and planning. I think the pay is comparable and WLB is probably the same for each group. If you do mostly planning in your career, you can flip to controversy pretty easily. It’s just the reverse of what you have been doing (supporting what has been done vs planning for what will be done). If you have done mostly controversy, you will have to adjust your mindset to think ahead instead of backwards, but also can be done. Really, as a well rounded tax pro you should be able to flex between both easily. Otherwise, you are not serving your clients fully. Planners need to anticipate what will happen on audit. Controversy people need to understand the planning to defend it. So, I would argue that as JDs/LLMs you should be training for both. If you take on that mindset, you’ll be highly marketable.

I came across a post boasting about perks in big4 vs park in Witch companies, here are my input 1. I started my career with big4. Although it gave a lots of perk to keep you grounded or get you in comfort zone some major cons were A. Out dated technology stack B. No work life balance C. This big 4 always carry tapes to measure your performance. 2. I recently joined a witch company and here are my inputs A. Latest tech stakes but slow pace of work B. No long working hours (gov job)

I often see posts about people getting 350K exit or 450K or more in FAANG. Are those strategy folks from Big 4 or are there cyber folks too getting these exits ? I am making close to 200k as M3 in cyber . Not able to anything that would pay more than this in non-consulting ? What roles should I target ?

Career question. Currently a big4 financial tax manager doing mostly fed compliance. I do not wish to become a partner as selling business is not my thing. I've been entertaining two exit options. Exit now as more of a general accounting role hoping to be a controller one day vs wait couple more years and exit at SM/director level hoping to be a head of tax or tax director somewhere. The end goal for me is to make as much as possible and be able to retire from corporate grinds.

For context, am considering using a tutor specifically to help tighten up weak points between my 1st and 2nd sitting
