Overland park is great area. But travel from Kansas city will suck. Not many direct flights and very small airport which is kind of good as you can be in and out in no time
I’m on the St. Louis side of the state - but I know that my KC friends love it there - including a lot of transplants from St. Louis. Good beer, good night life, seems like there’s a decent amount of development happening.
I work at downtown KC - travel to work. I was pretty surprised at how nice downtown was!
Can’t speak for KC specifically but, Overland Park, KS right outside KC is a GREAT place to raise a family. I was out there quite a bit for work some years back and I absolutely loved it.
I grew up around the area and now lives in Overland Park. What are you looking for specifically? Family or no family? Where are you moving from?
I live in downtown KC and I enjoy it. Single 25 male for context. Housing downtown is booming which is making living downtown pricier that it ought to be. Like any downtown, there are some areas that aren't as safe, but by far and away, we don't have problems like other cities. There's a number of good places to live downtown, and a few districts that include things like a farmers market, downtown grocery store, and more.
Our burbs are top notch. Overland Park/ Leawood are some of the best in the country for school/ community/ etc.
Commutes are negligible compared to any big city. Burbs to downtown is about 30-40 min in rush hour.
Our entertainment districts are really starting to fill out these days. The "power and light" district is very popular, crossroads district is very historic, and the Plaza is upscale shopping/ dining.
They build a streetcar downtown a few years ago and it's exploded in popularity and they recently approved an extension of it to push it between downtown and all of the points above, all for free.
We have a new airport in progress. It'll take a few years years, and maybe a few more, but MCI isn't bad for the time being. Door-to-gate is 5 min on a bad day. You will struggle to find direct flights to smaller destinations, which can be a pain, but I've made do. Airline loyalty can be tough since all airlines serve kc, they don't really encroach on each other meaning you generally have one option per city.
I think it goes without saying, but we're known for a BBQ.
As a extra, I'm looking for a roommate downtown if you're 22-30 male and interested.
Family - also what’s best neighborhood to live close to Fort Leavenworth?
I would recommend staying in Shawnee and making the commute to Fort Leavenworth.
