Any LGBT consultants care to share about their work experience? Being LGBT is awkward to me as I feel the lack of diversity but it's also not common to talk about.

We re all just people. No one cares and I don't make a big deal about it. Everyone just wants to do their job and go home.

I have a coworker who had a very negative experience. When the partner heard about it, he pulled the plug on the entire project. Everyone was instructed to cancel travel the next week and it the partner voided the contract, with penalty, and a letter explaining why... and stating that he would not entertain any RFP's in the future unless the situation changed. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Wow.

I'm out at work when it comes up, also very active in our pride network but know others who aren't. I've had some awkward situations here and there (maybe once or twice) at a client site with someone saying "fag" or "so gay" but when I'm with people who know my background they are quick to have my back. More supportive than my own family sometimes I would say, and that's saying a lot. Diversity of people and thought is important in our world and I feel like consulting generally embraces that everyone isn't a cookie cutter because it's better for everyone including the bottom line. If you're having any issues or hesitation strongly recommend you look elsewhere for a role. It's not worth the energy to even have this as a concern in the back of your mind. Come to KPMG!

I'm LGBT but it never becomes a topic to bring up. Work is work

Personally, I'd be fine if my coworkers didn't associate me with who and what I'm f^}*]+#. It's not appropriate for work. But I also don't want to be in an environment where I have to hide my pronouns. Be professional and it shouldn't be that big a deal.

KPMG promotes diversity and has biggest LGBT Pride network!

Usually try to keep it lighthearted but also politely informing/not being afraid to be me. Once out there was an office bet going as to whether or not I was a lesbian. One of the clients let it slip at happy hour, so I asked what the bet was... Apparently $50. I told them they were both wrong, to give me the $50 and we'd call it even. Happy to say these two gents are now good friends. They hired me back specifically for a future project outside my practice area. Doesn't always work out that perfectly but I don't waste my energy on worrying about it. To make myself more confident, I also talked to my boss when I started. He said if I ever had to question whether I felt comfortable on a project, that he'd take care of it no questions asked. Great to have that understanding in advance. I doubt I'd ever ask for that but it puts the concerns completely out of my mind when I'm working. I just know I don't need to worry. Being involved in the pride network is a great thing to be able to talk about/hint at in casual conversation to test the waters if you're hesitant to drop the pronouns just yet. I'll mention it to co-staff or clients in passing to try to get a read. Does that help?

9 times out of ten you will not run into a problem. But I did once have an Indian manager and his "protege" who seemed to have a problem. Was told it may be a cultural thing.

Also... @K3, Title IX actually doesn't protect against that. Company policy would cover us at KPMG, but in 28 states it's still perfectly legal to make a decision like that and/or fire someone simply because of their orientation. Not many people know that. Marriage is now federally protected, but the federal employment non-discrimination act (ENDA) doesn't currently include LGBT protections. Wild world we live in.

It's also possible that I'm being irrational so any outside insight is appreciated

I'm not LGBT, but none of my friends who are seem to be treated differently by colleagues. Some do feel it a bit when going to less... forward-thinking clients.

like

@K2, how do you handle a closed minded client? I'm out and talk about my BF among colleagues when the time is right. Current client likes to have casual lunches and ask about weekends etc, so I know my BF will come up when speaking about that etc.

I'm straight and I have a number of out peers and friends at all levels who are very comfortable talking about their personal life at work.

like

Yeah, that helps a lot. I'm heavily involved in PwC's pride network and out at work, but being at a client like this is just... Different dor me. Thanks for the response

like

@K2 - the partner voided the contract when a client reacted negatively?

like

K2 wait what?! A KPMG partner pulled sold work because someone was LGBT? I find that very hard to believe given title 9

like

Sorry, no... Partner pulled because of the client treating our guy negatively because he's gay. But yes, voided it in a heartbeat.

Am straight but worked with several open (and proud) coworkers. Never was an issue in the slightest

It seems like every firm advertises that they support diversity and inclusion. What does your firm actually do in terms of mentorship or other programs for diverse attorneys and do you find it actually beneficial? My firm reached out about a mentorship program where they were supposed to pair us with a partner mentor who is also person of color, but I still haven't heard back.

Ladies, I had a breakthrough with my boyfriend and I am so proud. I have encouraged him to go to therapy for years. He grew up with a father who is emotionally abusive. He felt like he didn’t need to go because he could just “handle it” (part of the toxic culture he was raised in) so I stopped pushing. Yesterday he told me he was going to therapy to try it out, I said okay, and made him a coffee to go. He came home, hugged me, cried, and read me a list of things he was working on. 🥺💛
