I mentioned it in my interview at my last job. I'm a single mom of 3 with almost no help/support in that area and the job I'd held previously made it clear that they didn't consider "my kid is sick with strep throat" as an acceptable reason to ask to work from home for a few days. I was told during the interview where I disclosed my situation that it wasn't a problem at all and employees were encouraged to take time off to take care of their family if needed. Fast forward 2 years and I get a boss with no kids...my daughter gets COVID in January, gave it to me, I missed 2 audit meetings and was terminated. But I will bring it up in every interview because I want to make sure that any potential employer of mine is aware of and able to give me some flexibility in this area.
100% this!!! While it’s wrong to be unfairly punished for having obligations to your kids, you want to land where family obligations are understood and accepted by the company.
- from a former employee terminated for similar leave circumstances and now in a more family friendly company 💛
I’m in the financial industry now. When I interviewed with current company I did not mention it but once I started I did. I have awesome managers and they ask about them and when they catch them on video for a meeting, which is rare, they really love it and encourage it. They know I’m a hard worker so I’ve never had an issue. They also know I’m a single mom which I think that it is important they know that and given they know that, I feel they are more adamant about keeping me around too. My managers are very empathetic though and both parents themselves so they get it. I have interviewed and depending on how the interview feels, I will sometimes mention I’m a parent. Not sure if it’s hurt me but I think it’s important I bring that up since it’s a part of who I am and I need flexibility sometimes so they have to be open minded. If they’re not, then I don’t want to work for them anyways.
If WLB is important to you, I think it’s a miss not to bring it up. I’ve been an interviewer and had this question asked- it paved the way to share the support our upper management gives, and personal experience of being a young mom. It will weed out places that wouldn’t be a good fit.
Yeah, didn't matter why I missed the meetings, only mattered that I missed them. Made it to the first 3, missed the last 2. Terminated the following week and then tried to keep me from getting unemployment.
That’s called wrongful termination and you can sue them for it. I’d seek out a lawyer if I were you. Especially if you have everything documented
I want to file a complaint with EEOC or a lawsuit or something, because I was also on special accommodation through ADA and they made me jump through hoops to get it and then treated me differently from my coworkers after they approved it, just not sure where to start with all of it.

I definitely think an employment attorney could help you sort out your potential claims and advise you on what your best course of action may be. Don't give up - please try and get the counsel you deserve 🙏
I have had a lot of interviews before accepting the role at my current company. All the previous interviews I had mentioned being a mom and finishing grad school right after giving birth. The tone always changed after mentioning that I was mom with young child. After all those failed interviews I decided not to mention being a mom in my interviews. I then got hired for my current company and didn’t mention having a baby until after signing on.
