Any new (< 1 year) SC experienced hires from HC here? Did you get staffed easily? How do you deal with low utilization? On the bench since March, here.

Hmm I see an issue if your counselor is busy. It's not a good excuse from a good counselor. He/she needs to make the time. We have to invest in our people. You counselor should be front and center and should open up some opportunities for you. This is especially the case for our experienced hires. It's not really fair for us to throw you into the networking mix when that is not what you are normally used to doing.

I think as experienced professionals we all know what networking is. The point is, even for PRDs people seem to be selecting from the 'old' pool of colleagues. I also think it has to do with the level. SC is more expensive than C. This week I got dropped from another short billable project bc we were giving the client deep discounts, so they had to go with a C-level colleague. The whole staffing system is flawed, and I don't appreciate the 'that's how it is in consulting' answer. I also happen to know other consultants in competition, and they don't seem to be having exactly the same experience. I want to work, I'm not being given equal chances to, and then I'm being called out for low utilization. How is that fair?

I'm in the same boat. Experienced hire in strategy, 15 years experience and joined early Fall. Been on the beach now for 2.5 months. Networking like crazy, working on lots of PRDs, making significant contribution to an industry community and looking in other service lines for projects but there is no end in sight. At this point I'm beginning to explore opportunities outside the firm. I want to work on projects and do what I was hired to do but if there isn't any work than I I have to go. I have a family and cannot get caught in a situation where I am let go because of low utilization.

You have any PRD? PRD + trainings + meetings can be helpful to meet people. It sounds repetitive, but it's really in the network you build.

like

By meetings I mean presentations, things advertised in your office/practice etc (essentially what you find in the mail you'll stop reading once you have a project)

like

@D5 I wish I were West - been hearing things are kinda moving there. Aside from PRDs, been also talking to PPDs directly, as I was seeing no light with M/SM. But again, to no avail. I mean, I want to work so badly, but there seems to be little opportunity, at least for ppl like me, industry experienced hires. I'm stressed out all the time. Don't wanna be part of the 'fat' that's being cut off, you know? Tried really hard to get here.

@M2 - definitely not the healthiest place now even by consulting standards

like

@deloitte3 absolutely. Your counselor should be your advocate. When I joined my counselor gave me a list of 10 people to reach out to and I spoke to every single one of them. Those 10 people didn't net me a role but they connected me with the person that I definitely needed to speak with. I got staffed. It's all about timing and nurturing your network. I get that you are frustrated and that you just want to work but you have to be persistent and be focused like a laser on doing everything that is within your power. The real opportunities lie with the managers and senior managers who are working to sell the work. Also, A big mistake that I've seen experience tires make is that they are too tied to the industry that they are most comfortable with. I would strongly urge you to go outside your industry but to use those core skills that you were hired for. This shows your flexibility but it also shows your durability in different industries. Keep us posted but also be sure to use your pure network is well. Talk to the business analysts and the proctor controllers in your office, they know what is up and they are great resources.

like

let's set the record straight: "networking" is not about setting up 30 min with a PPD- get on a proposal, *show* that you are able to do the work, and you'll be fine

OP, nailed it

like

Joined 11 months and got staffed in two weeks. Just network.

How many years of work experience do u have OP?

@D1 been networking like crazy. RM keeps telling me that I'm doing all the right things, and that other SC like me in the region are in the same place. @D2 7yrs relevant, 14yrs total. I'm in a really bad mood due to all this.

How often do you go to the office? Have you set up one on one chats with Senior Managers? As a new SC you should use your counselor to get introduced to their network first.

@D3 almost every day at the office. Lots if 1-on-1 with SMs, I keep hearing that 'clients are putting us on hold' or that there's nothing new in the pipeline. Got really close to getting staffed 5-6 times, but then didn't get it bc the client wanted a C for cost, or went with someone more experienced. Counsellor is too busy to get a hold of. Has introduced me to 1 person.

@OP: Are you West HC? Unfortunately, pipeline is bad, nothing more you can really do aside from network and take on as much PRD as possible to get your name out there.

@D4 Yes, so many PRDs, for last performance year I had like 12 of them, mostly long-standing and still running. At some point I felt I was the go-to when someone was looking help for PRD. Office events, yes as well.

Are u southeast region?

Is the HC bench deep? Any insight on how the practice is doing as a whole? Have an offer and am debating whether or not to accept.

Helpful. Thanks!

Hello. I work at a mid size erp/epm consulting firm and my base salary is not comparable to big4s. I currently make a TC of 105k with two years of consulting experience. I asked for a raise last month and now my TC will be pumped up to 126k at the end of year. I have been poached by many consulting firms and some are offering 135-150k TC. I have a masters degree in data science and 4 years of working experience. Does it make sense for me to look around even after I asked for a raise?
