Any new fathers irritated or rubbed the wrong way about all the programs/benefits/focus on working mothers and very little (if any) on working dads?

Be irritated and raise your concerns. Working moms would have more help if men were given more benefits. It's great for everyone.

Anne Marie Slaughter's book Unfinished Business has some really good ideas on this topic. Our work places need to adapt. I don't understand why more office buildings don't have early childhood centers on the first floor. I feel like it should be standard and you could pop down to see your young one during the day. Think about how much time it would save. Also, companies could offer it as part of the benefits package. It really wouldn't cost them that much. I feel like this is so obvious and don't know why it is not the norm yet. Also, for the business world, one year sounds radical, but one year is immensely important in child development land. I feel like people should have the option to take one year without losing their jobs. I'll admit that I haven't thought this one fully through, but from the view point of putting child development first, this seems like a reasonable compromise. Btw, Deloitte's new four month program is awesome and I am delighted that so many people are using it. Does it really matter if someone temporarily disappears? It doesn't matter that much in the office, but it really matters for your kid. If we all decided that we were cool with not continuing the human race, that would be one thing, but families are here to stay. Companies and societies need to adapt. We don't live in a country where one income can support a full family and not to mention that women are out-earning the number of college degrees. We are due for a complete overhaul of the system, but hopefully we'll continue down the path of progress. OP's original comment is a start. Late night pontificating over. 🎤

When you give birth you can complain. It take up to a year for a woman's body to return to normal after childbirth. How are you contributing to childbirth?

Maybe we just need to use gender neutral language- "parents"

Takes longer than 8 weeks to raise a child A1.

I agree, however, that it's not about just the first year. We need to be a collective unit and do better at parenting as a whole, which focuses on everyone.

like

8 weeks paternity leave at ACN if you are primary caregiver. Guys can opt to do condensed work weeks or work flexibly too. Seems quite even to me - obviously the person who gave birth to the child gets a bit longer given they have to recover also.

like

From Europe - you guys have a rough deal here (men and women). It's sub human how you treat parents and their newborns. Why don't Americans strike about this or start some form of political movement to change things for the better? It's the human race, kinda the most important 'deliverable'

like

We get 16 weeks of paternity leave... I'd say that benefits working dads. Sure the programs/workshops/meetings are a bit mom centric but they invite dads too it seems. Besides, I don't have to squeeze that watermelon out soooo... yeah... as a dad-to-be, I'm totally cool with them being a bit more mom centric, they deserve it.

like

Totally agree D1. Get real D2. 😆

like

Examples OP? I feel like I have it pretty ok, and recognize that it's the moms who blazed the trail to make it that way. Also, my wife benefits from some great programs, which is good for us.

Dude, I literally draft political movements for this kind of thing in my head throughout the day. The only thing keeping me back is the political compliance group

Not as irritated and rubbed the wrong way as most women *still* are in the workplace. #notfinishedyet

Currently a teacher but looking for a career move. What are jobs that a teacher can move to without having to go back to school? Everyone says don’t leave because the benefits are good but when health, dental, and vision rates are rising constantly and I could do my own retirement plan in a different field I’d argue the benefits aren’t something to keep you in a position any longer.
