What’s the pay range in pain management?
My baby was 1, but I had the advantage in that my husband and I could handle that financially. I’d been at JPM forever, so was able to negotiate some unpaid leave. If you can swing that, I truly recommend it. If you want to get back into things, you can make up for lost career progression with special projects. I’d say that the work life balance isn’t great, but there are always trade offs. I love working.
I went back when my daughter was 6 months. She’s 17 months now. Agree with above - work life balance is hard because you are constantly juggling. Takes a lot of communication and planning with your spouse. And we were fortunate to ha e childcare we are really happy with. Luckily I really like my job. I feel like having a baby has given me a strong sense of purpose. I also don’t have time for the BS. I just get it done. I’m much more efficient with my time.
I should add - have a conversation with your team (or a trusted manager) on expectations when you return. Ex - are you working from home more, working different hours, not traveling, pumping every 3 hours? I think as long as people know, they are very supportive
16 weeks with my first and just had my 2nd. With all the physical changes, it was tough with my first, and I stopped nursing before I went back which made it easier. Job flexibility helped, as did having a husband whose job also allowed for a flexible schedule, along with reliable, trusted childcare. Because half the time I could make my own schedule and dictate when I traveled, it helped with the adjustment. Asking for a few months of flexibility post maternity leave isn’t an unreasonable request especially if you’ve been with the company a while and/or you are highly regarded in your position. Expect the balance to shift as time passes, you get back into the swing of work, and your baby grows.
Thanks a lot for these responses...very useful info
