Someone please tell me if I am crazy. I am at a family law firm with approximately 25 attorneys. I previously worked at small shops where I essentially handled everything myself with no support staff. Now at my current firm I have a paralegal who really only makes my job more difficult… am I crazy to say that I don’t need a paralegal as I am comfortable operating as a solo and pay me slightly. I’m already pretty much operating on my own anyway. Feel like it’s a win win.

What are examples of “non-billable” tasks that attorneys are completing? Backstory: I’ve seen firm softwares advertise their products saying, “You can’t bill for these tasks so you should have our software do it.” The task would be something like drafting a financial statement that is filed with the court. I would think that is billable.

App for writ of HB filed and served (not by sheriff) with no order for hearing filed yet there is a hearing date set. Does my client have to go? He lives in a different county. I think it's a ploy for OC to be able to properly serve him in court. Debating on whether or not to show up. I entered a special appearance and mtn to dismiss for this motion only. Do i go and risk getting served in a county far away from my client's home?

Is it important to offer support staff that speak a foreign language or is it sufficient if the attorney can communicate with the client? We had one bilingual paralegal and another who is not. The bilingual one left us some time ago.

Thus, we are left with one who can’t communicate with about 25% of our clients. And there just isn’t enough revenue to support two paralegals despite my partner pushing us to hire.
