I have a friend who went from medical assisting into tech. She did a software engineering boot camp and found a job extremely quickly. Her first job paid around 70k now she’s up to 80k, so if you go into tech you would take a pay cut since you are making 130k right now. However, it’s a well paying field and with time you will probably be making over 150k. Also - since you have experienced in healthcare it would probably be easy for you to get into a healthcare tech job. Hope this helps!
Sending hugs your way
I’d try to transfer to your hospital’s IT dept as a clinical informatics nurse. I have a CS degree as well as advanced nursing degrees. The transition isn’t simple as I’m also looking for higher paying remote roles and I have the education. You’ll need experience to even cut close to 130k let alone 150k.
You work in icu? Where are you making 130k as a nurse?
I work in Texas internal staffing for 1 hospital. Not a travel nurse
You might be overly optimistic or you’re joking. You think you’re going to make $150k with no tech experience with your first job? Just because you got a bachelors or did a cert? Not likely.
Is internal staffing considered a float
Don’t listen to the naysayers. If you complete a coding boot camp and have a portfolio of good projects, you can definitely easily break 6 figures for your first tech job. It’s not easy, you have to dedicate extra time to learning (anywhere from 6 months - 2 years). I’m from CA, I see people getting $150K software engineering offers all the time.
The OP wants to make $150k plus their first year as computer scientist/programmer and leave nursing. They are considering leaving nursing and getting a certificate from a boot camp or a BA in CS. I don’t think they can get $150k right out of the gate, even in the Bay Area, that’s the point. I don’t think they will even make the $130k they are making now as a nurse if they go into CS.
I thought the same thing you did that tech would be where the moneys at. But Ive started at 70,000 with minimal raises for a big hospital network. I’m sure 150k is out there but it’s a needle in a haystack
Have you thought about a career in Data Analytics?
I think that most IT like jobs you will be starting fresh, or at least with a slightly higher paying entry level position. A friend of mine went from RN to data analyst and then data engineer after a couple of years, fully remote, starting at 130 - 150k. But he really put in some time working on data skills while working as analyst. You have to think in terms of career move, you're not making a lateral or a step up, so you will need to show how your experience as an RN makes you better than a Udemy grad.
I plan on going the Informatics route to a career in data, because I've already been exposed to building reports and dashboards through the EHR, just not using SQL. Plus, Informatics has exposed me to the bigger picture in healthcare in terms of data, coordination of care, and revenue cycle. But I already have a couple connections that I am hoping can vouch for me. If you haven't already, start building your network while you are building your skills.
