Any one else feeling a little disenchanted with NYC? I’ve spent the past two months wfh staying out of state... being by beach/woods has been so grounding, it’s mad cheap and just easier way of life

I have been in a southern beach area from the tri-state. I don’t know when to go back.. I could easily stay here the remainder of the year (drove down). It is completely different. Quarantined in my apartment for three months, barely seeing anyone. To being around family, going to the beach/ocean every day. Walks, bikes, SUP, kayak. It’s been life changing. No advice, just that I get it and don’t know what the future holds either.

As a native, New York is the most overrated city. I definitely see my second career being outside of a city. I'm generally one who you would expect to be very urbanist in lifestyle, but I also can't stand the lack of a cohesive community that each of my ancestors had here but the professional world increasingly lacks. You won't find me in a 'beach town' but woods+kayaking+knowing your neighbors is just what I'd love to have. Still figuring out where to find that having been in cities my whole life.

I can’t believe I’m saying this... but I don’t think I ever want to go back

OP what area are you in? Curious where is close to both beach and woods, 1.5 hours from NYC, and cheap!

There’s a reason rent prices in NYC are going down. Many people are thinking like you.

likesmart

It’s temporary. When the rents go down more will eventually move in.

I'm really hoping covid ushers in a new era of humanity decentralizing from cities. I think we'll all be much happier.

NYC is a shithole right now. Thank you mayor

Oof, imagine thinking bail reform is a bad thing

Never. You must not be a true New Yorker

I feel ya. I have some good friends that were transplants and decided they had enough of NYC too. The allure just fades and that’s ok

This is the big assumption that you'll be able to find the job/ opportunity you want outside of a big city after the pandemic is over. I'm sure we would all love to live in lower COLA areas and maintain our big city salaries.

like

Move over to Jersey City. Rents are cheaper and it's waaaaaaay easier to keep a car, so you can escape pretty easily.

I spent 3 weeks in southern Utah hiking Arches, Bryce Canyon etc. while the outdoors was nice, I couldn’t wait to get back to the city even with covid. Suburbs are not for me.

I say this as someone who really likes NYC (and cities in general) - it’s really important to get out of it sometimes. Even when it’s open and there’s a lot going on, like you said it’s grounding to get out to nature everyone once in awhilez

likehelpful

Life outside of big cities feels more real for some reason I’m yet to be able to explain. I’ve lived and felt the same way in Chicago, Rio and Sydney.

like

Honestly, being away from the city has made me realize all the reasons I moved there. I couldn’t possibly hate driving more, and suburbia is just so soul crushingly bland. I miss the pre Covid city so damn much

like

I haven’t been able to leave at all despite being employed this entire time because I have no family that could take me in non-impacted areas. I think I like NYC better now since I’ve been stuck? It’s like everyone whose super insufferable has moved out and it’s just me and everyone else who makes less than 75k a year.

like

Will you be able to WFH forever and keep your big city salary in a low COL city indefinitely? I don't think so.

like

No. I grew up in the suburbs and love the city, even with COVID. I traveled a lot pre-COVID and always got as much beach and nature as I wanted. Even now, I’ve gone to the beaches multiple times and taken frequent hikes on the many NYS trails. I’d love for it to be cheaper but I truly love the life I have here, again, even during the pandemic.

All these people who think they’re companies are going to pay them NYC salaries while they’re living in Pennsyltucky are in for a surprise.

likefunny

If the jobs become 100% WFH they’re just not going to pay nyc salaries. The city is an expensive grind. That’s never been lost on the people paying wages. Now, if a job requires you to be in the office 80% or two days a week then that will limit how far you can move away most likely. If the job can’t really be 100% WFH and you need to be in the city say a week per month that’s another story. Maybe they’ll offer a travel stipend or make the necessary costs part of total comp negotiations. But unless the employees are NYC residents I don’t see them putting starting salaries at NYC levels.

I totally feel this, but my friends and coworkers don’t lol.. I think this is different from a normal holiday break where I‘m eager to return to the city because there’s no fomo (the 2/3 in the summer heat AND wearing a mask?? nah miss me with that ish), so I’m interested to see how I feel when the city is “back to normal.” Grateful that it’s gonna be probably another year though..

My SO is a contractor and takes multi-month breaks in between projects. I’ve noticed for years that their personality changes (for the worse) when working, but WFH has made life especially toxic.
