Yes, it has crossed my mind. I don't think public schooling will go away; rather some of the confines of public schooling might be reconsidered.
This educational system is mass producing compliant builders of the machines instead of designers of the machines.

The businesses of private, charter, for profit and online schools are pushing to reap the benefits from the District’s slow return to the class. The district’s wanted parents to commit and start school to hold on to daily attendance fund (ADA). They are worried parents will pick alternatives to public schools.
If the President offers vouchers for those Districts that don’t open to parents, than the collapse of the public school system as we know it will happen. The Union will be destroyed and the numbers of students in public schools will decrease. Most students attending the public schools will be the special education ones, of whom the other schools won’t take. So we are left with the low, behavioral, and struggling learners who can’t pass their entrance test. So sad!!!
Trust me California only a privileged few can afford private education and vouchers will not be available for all. So I’m pretty sure the poor will continue to need a free public education.

I think we will all be moving toward a more hybrid model.
I think it’s analogous to the “defunding the police” movement. I think there’s an opportunity to re-think the structures and institutions, but I think we need to have smart, well-meaning people who don’t let it just burn to the ground in the process. Like that movement, this is being spurred by more people becoming aware of inequities and missteps that we’ve known about for a long time, so I do hope that it leads to some positive movement forward.
I’m only starting my 5th year, and I’m pretty good at virtual learning, and comfortable with the educational technology, if I can be so modest.
Yep. It's...not looking good.
I think there will be a grand exodus of students and teachers alike.
Do you mean for the long term California?

Possibly. It offers more choice to parents and students.
how about the dismantling of our country? I'm so worried.
That too. Its sad.

Not sure. Trying to look at our current situation with a “stay curios” mindset, make sense of it, find a way forward. Reading this book right now. I don’t think public education is over, but it will certainly change, maybe not all for the bad.
It is very possible, I just hope we are smart enough to avoid being the cause of this movement!
Yes I do believe we are at the crossroads!!
In California I can’t see kids going to private schools.... right now the kids who went to private are now enrolling in public since we are all distance learning. Parents want to save a bit of money. I’ll be honest we may not be ready to start school this week... because of all the info given to us at the last minute, but I’ll tell you the staff that I work with is working their butts off and really want to try this big human experiment out. I already have kids emailing me... they sound a bit stressed but I assured them that mistakes will be made, kids will go to wrong classes, everyone will e confused for awhile until a routine is made. We can do this at least the high school kids.... I’m not so sure about the little ones... I work in a low income community where you have to work... kids or not. I was just wishing the other day that college kids could help teach the little ones in small pods. The little kids are the ones who are going to suffer the most...
Maybe a little?! Lol
If teachers are unwilling to go back into the classroom it will certainly put an end to the much needed in person education system. Unfortunately it will also mean a lot of teachers will be unemployed.
Well on our way

I actually just read an article yesterday that got me thinking about that https://medium.com/@madisonchristinewoodward/how-school-choice-is-draining-public-education-funding-839a8e2a11b3
